2nd Trimester

Anyone take anti-depressants still?

Just wondering. ?I still take Prozac and my doctors seem unconcerned. ?I lowered my dose when I found out I was pregnant. ?I am occasionally overcome with anxiety about what possible side effects taking the meds will have on my baby although it is a drug that is not proven to do anything but also not proven to do nothing. ?

Re: Anyone take anti-depressants still?

  • i changed to Zolof b/c it's safe for pregnancy and breast feeding... a lot of anti-depressants you can't be on if you're going to BF but you can with Zolof

Just curious, what did you switch from?  I tried switching from Prozac to Zoloft but Zoloft didn't work for me, so I had to switch back.  I'm taking the Prozac just every third day now and I'm going to quit taking it 4 weeks before my due date.

  • I am actually on generic for Wellbutrin XL and Celexa. We had a pre-preg consult with My doc to make sure it was OK. He double checked the meds in a book and said that they were OK.
  • I was on Zoloft in the beginning but chose to stop because my anxiety was feeling somewhat leveled off (I go through periods of goods and bads). But my doc said that Zoloft was entirely safe through the first two trimesters.
  • i switched from zoloft to celexa because my dr had done a study with Sick Kids hospital in Toronto and had found it was fine from conception to breast feeding.  i have very severe symptoms that i find i cant function properly with out taking them so we had to find something that was safe.
  • When I found out that I was pregnant I started cutting my Lexapro pill in half for about 1 1/2 months. After that I started taking (1) every other day. I have been off of it for 4 months and I honestly can say I feel great. Lexapro is a had drug to comes off of as at times it felt like my heart was racing and I had brain twitches (you'll understand what I mean when you come off the pill). Now I very rearly have issues w/ my depression, I am just a happier person knowing I have a little one growing inside me. This is just me though- I would suggest talking to your dr as I know post partom depression is rough too. May just be worth it to stay on it IMO.

  • I was on 20mg of Celexa for a year for anxiety.  My Dr. was uncomfortable with this, and switched me to 20mg of Prozac.  Only because there is more data on Prozac and Pregnancy (she is quite old fashioned).

I would have stayed on Celexa were it up to me, although the Prozac is working well.

My feeling is-it's better for my baby to not have me completely anxiety ridden with my OCD thoughts....it's better for both of us.

     I feel great!

  • I'm on 20 mg. of Prozac a day for depression and anxiety. I feel much better now that I'm pregnant, but I'm kind of scared to go off the meds for fear I'll get depressed. My doctor said it's much more risky for the baby when the mother is anxious and/or depressed than any side effects from the medication.

  • I was taking 20MG Paxil prepregnancy and stopped about a month before TTC. I started taking 7.5MG of Buspar for anxiety about a month ago. It's not doing much for me. I think i'm going to ask the doctor for something else or if i could up the dosage.
  • Thanks guys. ?I am also on 20 mg of prozac, down from 30. ?I know the?withdrawal?effects for prozac are not as bad as other drugs (like paxil) but I guess I will talk to my doctor about continuing it throughout pregnancy and breast feeding.
  • i just completed the transition from prozac to zoloft.
  • I continue to take 20 mg of Prozac and neither myself nor my doctor have any concerns.

  • I'm still taking my 20mg of Prozac.  My RE told me that of all the anti-depressants his preference for pregnant women is Prozac.  He had no concerns about me taking it.  My OB was less comfortable about it but when I explained that my RE was fine with it, he didn't make an issue of it.  My RE is the one who got us pregnant through IVF and he's the medical director of the reproductive endocrinology and infertility clinic at the university hospital so I do have a lot of trust in him.  Good luck to you!
