I go for mine this afternoon, only working a half day of work.
The orange glucola has been sitting in my refrigerator for a little over a week getting nice and cold. I'm going to go home and drink it with the tv on for distraction.. but my question is about eating/drinking beforehand. My OB said i don't have to fast but I'm wondering if I should steer clear of sugary choices for meals? I already passed on a donut this morning b/c i wasn't sure if that would cause a problem.
Did you eat anything in particular that made you super thirsty so you could chug your drink? And did you chug straight from bottle or did you drink it in a glass.
Thx!
Re: If you already had the glucose test, c'mon in...
I ate like I normally would beforehand. I figure if I changed my eating habits for just that, it wouldn't be as accurate anyway.
I would advise not chugging it. I would take the full five minutes (or three, whatever they give you) to slowly drink it. Doesn't hit the stomach so hard.
Its a pretty small bottle from what I remember so it wasnt hard to drink and at the office they gave me 5 minutes to drink it, I think I finished it in about 5 seconds instead. The morning of my 1-hour I had a bagle and cream cheese and a cup of coffee and failed, but alot of people fail there 1 hour, I went on to pass my 3 hour just fine.
Theres really nothing you can do to "trick" the test with what you eat in the morning. If you have it, it will show up eventually.
My bottle I think was only 10 ounces and I was told by the lab lady I had to drink it in 5 minutes. It honestly wasn't bad at all..just really sweet Hawaiian Punch.
I ate two hard boiled egg whites and it kept me full enough.
do I need to refrain from peeing before I go in for the test? i guess i could just call my OB again.
I had a cinnamon raisin bagel this morning already. but I think I will do scrambled eggs and toast for lunch like the OP said. And drink my juice after I finish eating it, pretend it's tang or something.
Its a blood test, atleast mine was, so you dont have to worry about pee.
It's crazy how everyone's repsonses are different for the same test.
Here is what my midwife told me: No food one hour before the test, but you can still drink water. Try to avoid sugary foods like maple syrup. The nurse poured my drink into a cup, so I ended up not having to drink the entire container of liquid. I just drank and was done. It's not horrible, it kind of taste like flat orange soda.
I took this test at 16 weeks and passed with no problems. I will take it again at 28 weeks and am hoping for the results as last time. GL!
I have heard that avoiding eating 1-2 hours before the test increases your chances of passing it - don't know if that's true or not.
However, on the bottle they gave me it actually says about fasting 12 hours - though my doc did not tell me I have to do that.
I'll have my 1hr glucose test around 16 weeks...I'll be interested to see how yours goes.
