If your dr puts you on bedrest, does that start your FMLA leave or would that be considered short-term disability? This is just curiosity, i'm clearly not on bedrest.

I didn't do it either, but I would expect it is STD. You have a physical condition that prevents working. FMLA is more when you are physically capable of working but want to take time for other reasons (to care for a loved one, etc.) Plus, you can only take FMLA once within a certain time period (a year?) and I don't know if you can break it up between bedrest and pregnancy if you go back to work in between.

I would call your human resources officer. When I went on bedrest it started my FMLA.
I'm trying to avoid calling them since it's not actually relevant for me (since I'm not pregnant. . anymore. . .or TTC yet). Thanks for letting me know how it worked for you.

My friend was on bedrest, and at her company she got her 12 weeks (I am not sure she used the whole thing) for FMLA and then another 12 weeks after her DS was born.. Obviously she got STD both times too..(for as long as she was on bedrest and 6 weeks after DS). I would think because they are different medical occurences, you would get both, but I could be totally wrong.

STD is disability insurance. If you go on bedrest, you would get paid a percentage of your pre-disability income to help you get through your sickness. STD is only paid when YOU are disabled, and is short-term, so like only for 13 or 26 weeks, depending on the policy.

Although it is very important to check your state laws as well.
I am in CA and CA not only adheres to FMLA, we also have CFRA (CA Family Rights Act) and CPDL (CA Preg Disability Leave). It's great to be pregnant in CA!
