New SAHM- Job Let Me Go

Was let go by my job of 3 years on Tuesday.  They have no remorse, I am 7 months pregnant - and they only gave me one month pay and 30 days left on my insurance.  I knew it was coming, they acted differently ever since I told them I was expecting.  I just figured they would wait until I was on leave.

I was planning on becoming a SAHM in Jan 2010. They just made that sooner.  They could have let me go earlier....I would have been able to rest and enjoy my summer. Big Smile

So DH just started a new job and benefits don't kick in until 60 days....geesh

Well now the nursery will be finished much earlier.

Thanks for listening...I hope to connect with many of you.

Re: New SAHM- Job Let Me Go

  • What was the reason they gave you for letting you go?  It better not have been because you were pregnant.
  • Loading the player...
  • I was an at will employee. Thier policy. They terminated my position and gave my duties to my supervisor.  Trying to save money.  Non profit.

And I am sure they didn't want to pay for my 30 day leave...geesh.

But let them tell it me being pregnant had nothing to do with it. Hmm

  • Wow, that really sucks.  My state is also an "at will" state so I understand that concept.  Did you go apply for unemployment compensation?
  • wow that sucks. sorry to hear that
  • sorry to hear that. :(   Can you collect unemployment?
  • It is a non profit...so it's a 50-50 chance for unemployment. But you ladies know that was one of the first things I did was put a claim in when I got home that afternoon.

It was sad...they came to my office twice while cleaning it out..to ask for my key to the building..the nerve.

  • Sorry to hear that.  The plus side is that you get to relax the rest of your pregnancy though.  I stayed working full time until I delivered and let me tell you, by about 36 weeks I was secretly hoping to get fired!

You may want to talk with an employment attorney.  Even though you were an at-will employee, letting you go due to pregnancy is still illegal, you would just have to prove that they didn't have any other good reason.  Were you the only one let go, or where there cuts being made in general?  It wouldn't hurt to talk with someone, most will do a free consultation.

  • I'm so sorry to about your situation. I just found out today that my dh was laid off. I know how you feel.

as an employer - if they are corporate or a non-profit- they pay into your state unemployment- and you are entitled to at least apply...if you still have your employee manual about the 30 day leave details- i would call your unemployment office and speak with someone and let them know exactly what happened- and exactly what you lost because when they question your employer about why they let you go- they will have to answer about that clause too...

Dont mention you were "planning on leaving in 2010"...

Good Luck and enjoy the extra time to nest and get ready!!

  • I was the only one. They did let two ladies go in January.  And one was working there 16 yrs....They claimed it was for financial reasons for them to be let go.
  • Sorry to hear it.

I was voluntarily laid off in July from my job of 11 years.  So, I'm SAH with Ben until my unemployment runs out.  It was a blessing in disguise, really.

I hope you're able to collect too!

This exact thing happened to me on Monday. I worked there for 3 years and bam...the company is doing poorly and I'm let go.

  • As you've seen, it's a blessing in disguise. I was on maternity leave prepping to sign up with nanny agencies when I received a call that my department was essentially being closed, so my services were no longer needed (which I'm sure they realized later, my services extended beyond the dept, oh well). Anyway, as mentioned before, you should be able to collect unemployment, but don't mention you're under a doctor's care (for pregnancy), and if it's anything like here in TX, you have to actually be looking for a job. You may not get hired being as visibly pg as I'm sure you are, but that's what you want, it's just a bunch of work you may not want to deal with. I did the minimum requirement, and half the time half-heartedly (but I still received interview requests and even an offer). GL!
