Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Re:daycare, it'll get easier right?

I wrote this week the kids started a new daycare centre.  The first day was fine, no tears, the second some tears from Reese, she's 18 months, but Gavin was fine, he's 3.  The 3rd both with tears and today, the 4th day, Gavin was up this morning saying he didn't want to go to his new daycare and crying about it.  My DH just called after leaving them there and he said they were both freaking out, granted Reese only started once Gavin did but still!!  They have been in daycare, a home daycare before this, since they were 11 months each, this is a new place but I didn't think it would be so bad.  After we leave the teachers say they do fine, a few cries here and there but not much....how long did it takes your DC to stop the morning meltdowns?  I am starting to second guess my decisions to change them!

  • Well, DD's been in the same center since she was 3 months, so I don't have personal experience to speak from, but my SIL has a 3-year-old and she put him in daycare for the first time when he was maybe 2 and a half? She said the first week was really bad (I think he cried all day the first day), but after that it got much better. She's since taken him out because her husband lost his job, but by the time he left, he loved school! She gave him a little backpack that he would take with him, supposedly that seemed to help.

All transitions are hard in the beginning, right?

  • Lily is 15 months and we just started her in daycare last week. The first two days were so bad the teacher asked if I could stay the following three days to help her adjust. She and I both went to the school for about 90 minutes, then I took her home (we still had our nanny on board to help us). That seemed to help some.

This week, though, Lily is still screaming when I leave her there. I don't expect that to stop anytime soon, but I am happy that they tell me she is doing a lot better for the rest of the time she is there. It is incredibly hard, but I know for us, at least, it is the right choice so I am just sticking with it.
