Pregnant after 35

Laxative or stool softener

I know, what an attractive title! lol

I honestly don't have any experience with either.

I'm not able to go often, which sucks, but then of course when I do, well you all know to well how that goes I'm sure so I'll not go into details.

Which is better?

Thanks!

Re: Laxative or stool softener

  • i just came back from seeing the dr because i was getting cramp like pain and for the past few days I couldn't go. She recommended colace and for bloating/pressure/gas to take gas-x. However, my dad said (he's a pharmacist) said the colace would take 2-3 days to work.

  • I went with the metamucil pills once or twice a day.  they seemed to work by the next day.
  • No laxatives while pregnant.

Colace (stool softener) is your best bet!

Also - prune juice (get it really cold) and dried apricots.

The apricots alone usually work for me!

    GL!!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • NO laxatives..I take Colace which my dr. highly recommended!

  • I go with apricots, and prune juice for when things are backing up.  I haven't had any problems!

  • If you want to try the natural route...FIBER ONE is your FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let me repeat that....FIBER ONE is your FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to eat 2 Fiber One products each day or I have problems going and a lot of discomfort.  I love their bars, poptarts and cereal.  It might take a little getting used to (the high fiber products will most likely give you VERY bad gas at first) but once you do get used to it, you will love them, very tasty!

To start, try having a bar as dessert to slowly get used to the extra fiber.  I had no problem with pop tarts or cereal in the am.  The bars just seem to have the mos potency!

    Good Luck!!

I was eating Fiber One bars all the time before I got pg but was told, on the 1st tri board I believe, that pg women weren't supposed to have  them because they contained chicory root.  I just stopped eating them.

  • I don't know about the chicory root thing....sounds a little crazy if you ask me but I don't really follow all the "rules"

But I eat the All Bran with Strawberries cereal for breakfast every day...the Fiber One cereals are good too and now I am addicted to the Fiber One muffins...they are SO good and easy to grab and go....and I am very regular.  I do drink a TON of water every day too and I think that helps.

  • Actually, you can get the prenatal vitamins now with the stool softener in them and you don't have to take any additional meds.
  • I'm a big fan of dried apricots. And, like Pinky said, Fiber One! That stuff reminds me of Phil Hartman's "Colon Blow" commercial on Saturday Night Live....LOL!

I read the same thing on 1st tri and asked my doctor about it.  She said that it didn't matter and that they were perfectly safe.  I am extremely careful about what I eat...and my doctor is very strict too (she is a high risk specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine).

I am glad to know that because I really loved the bars and they did help me before.

    Good one! THAT is hysterical!

  • This isn't my favorite topic - I'm far too familiar with it Sad

Anyway, I take colace every day (well, the generic cheap equivalent). It helps things to be less uncomfortable when I finally do 'go'.

The OB also rec'd senekot, which is a mild laxative but apparently ok when needed. THis speeds things along, which helps a lot.

The two together seem to work well. I eat a ton of fiber and drink gallons of water but neither really seem to help me. Bring on the drugs!

  • I've been on stool softeners for weeks, and they don't seem to help much.  FiberCon tabs though will open the floodgates!  I'd recommend using only 1 tab to start with.  2 tabs gave me colon blow.
