There was a thread on the 2nd tri board about the hazards of dropside cribs. I guess since it's been so long since I've been pg I have never heard this.
I had a dropside crib with my 2 boys and never had any issues.
Did any of you stay away from dropside cribs because safety reasons?
Thanks ladies!
Re: Dropside crib problems?
This is what one of the posts said:
CPSC is considering a proposal for a voluntary ban on the manufacture of all new dropside cribs.
But apparently this hasn't been done yet.
We bought a dropside crib, but we actually don't drop the side very much.
Me and mytwo siblings and DH and his three brothers all survived dropside cribs, and we figure the technology is better now than it was then, so how bad could they be?
We bought a non-dropside crib based on what we read on Consumer Reports - they had a recommendation for a crib at IKEA that was only $159!
Is there anything that IKEA doesn't sell?
I definitely want to spend less than $200 and have been looking online. Since dropside was what I had experience with and liked, I never considered anything else. I may now though.

I hear great things about the Ikea cribs!
My kids are both (still) in dropside cribs and I use the dropside evertime I put them in. Not so much when taking them out -- except for the 3 year old who just likes to be a PITA & not stand up. I'm 5'1", so I had to have a drop side. I looked at those without it, but there was no physical way I could put my kids down or pick them up without it when they were smaller.
Isn't the risk with the dropside that it could be installed incorrectly? Weren't people putting the dropside on upside down? Obviously it won't perform the right way if it is intalled the wrong way. But, if it is installed correctly it is safe.
DH and I purchased a convertible crib because we just wanted something that would last a long time and not have to worry about purchasing a toddler bed and then a teenager (YIKES!) bed. I didn't go with a drop-side because of the recalls and bad press, but I do believe it had a lot to do with people not putting them together correctly.
My parents actually purchased an IKEA crib and they LOVE it! DH and I put it together and it literally took us 10 minutes to do, it was super easy and it feels very sturdy. They only paid about $120.00 +/-
We purchased a dropside (Romina) and love it. I have back issues, and use the drop-side all the time.
I think the problem with drop-sides is that they are hard to manufacture well, and ergo, all the POS coming out of China could be potentially hazardous. A lot of the drop-sides we looked at did not seem that sturdy.
We spent the extra money and the the Romina one as it was much better quality and made out of hardwood.
