After rice cereal?

What did you start LO with next and how quickly did you move to try other things? ?DS has been eating rice cereal for a week or so now so I want to try other things. ?Did you keep up the rice cereal and then just add another fruit or vegetable too? ?Just curious. ?: )

Re: After rice cereal?

  • From what I understand, most people's pedis say start with veggies after the cereal but mine told me to start with fruits, so I started with bananas, then peaches, applesauce, prunes, and then pears.

When we started veggies, we did green beans first, carrots, squash, peas, and then sweet potatoes.

We did one fruit or veggie for three days and then switched so we would know if he was taking to it well.  Now I do a fruit for lunch and then a veggie for dinner, and I'm thinking about adding another fruit in the morning.  Since he's started the "real" stuff, he refuses to eat rice cereal or oatmeal.

  • We never gave DS rice cereal.  He had banana, avocado and then sweet potato.  We gave him a new food every 4-7 days.

  • We were told to start with cereals at 4 months and start veggies at 5, but since we didn't start at all until 5 months, I did cereal for 5 days and now I am on oatmeal (which he doesn't seem to like as much).

My hope is to keep some sort of cereal (or maybe yogurt if he doesn't take to the oatmeal?) as a breakfast food until he's no longer on pureed food, but also to start adding a veggie at lunch next week.

  • yes, we kept going with the ceral. Then we introduced pears. We did each new food for 3 days. After we introduced a fruit, we would start mixing it in with the cereal b/c DS seemed to like the cereal more that way.

Then we eventually went to oatmeal and he liked that much more than the rice cereal.

  • We started small amount of rice cereal just after 5 months, 1x per day, then after a week or so went to 2x a day and (per pedi) added sweet potato, pear, carrots, apple, squash, and prunes (not necessarily in that order, but that's all they recommended doing before 6 mo).

We just now went to 3x a day (though pedi said could start around 6 months) and have added banana, yogurt, green beans, peas, etc.

  • We followed the feeding plan provided by my LO's ped. We started with rice cereal, then yellow veggies, then green veggies. After that we introduced fruit. We waited 3-5 days between each new item bc the ped said that helps you pinpoint any allergies. She currently gets rice cereal and a fruit for breakfast and a veggie for dinner. We might switch he cereal to oatmeal bc rice cereal seems to really constipate her. Good luck!
