pda

ours was shut, then open, then shut with meds, now open again.  the plan is to monitor and see if it shuts again and, if not, then most likely surgery.  no obvious clinical symptoms at this point-although he is still requiring respiratory support.  Any btdt stories, outcomes, advice?

Re: pda

  • The NICU DS was in routinely did surgery to close PDAs at 3 days.  His surgery was very quick (less than 30-45 min from beginning to end).  His blood pressure and respiration improved immediatly. He didn't have any problems with the surgery and hasn't had any since.  He has a small scar on his back along his shoulderblade.  I don't think it is noticeable unless you are looking for it.

  • My DD had this surgery at 2 weeks old.  The surgery lasted under an hour and she impoved greatly after that.  Within a week after surgery she came off the vent and went to a CPAP machine.  I was nervous about doing surgery at that age but was so glad we did.  She continued to get better everyday after surgery.

BTW - we did 2 rounds of meds (in which closed it) and then it would re-open.  Sounds like PDA ligation surgery might be in your LO's future.

  • thanks ladies-one more question:

were your little one's npo for a while before or after surgery?

  • We had ours closed surgically closed when D was 3 weeks old. I tell ya, it was like night and day after that surgery. After we had that and were transported back to our home hospital, D immediately began improving, and was off the oscillator a week later and down on the vent. A week later, CPAP and 3 weeks later a cannula and taking full feedings.

  • our DS had the surgery at 7 months old. He was originally diagnosed with a small PDA that I guess the docs thought would close on it's own, but it didn't. Well we went for a second opinion (after much run around), at about 6 months and it was diagnosed as large, so they did it then. They said traditionally they use one "clip" to close it, and his took 2 clips and some internal stitches. Either way, his outcome was great. We went home the next day, and he actually was STANDING in his crib for the first time when my DH and I woke up @ 5:00am while staying in his hospital room with him (he had never done this before) So needless to say he felt great...:)
