Avocados lower/regulate blood sugar levels

Every day there seems to be a post about blood sugar and what to eat/not eat before the glucose test.

I have never seen anyone mention the benefit that avocados have. They really help regulate blood sugar. Sure they are loaded in fat but the healthy kind.

I had 1/2 avocado (small) 2 hrs before my 1-hr glucose test and passed with no issue. I still think if you are going to fail the test you will fail but so many women are borderline and then pass the 3 hr -- eat an avocado before you test and you may not have to bother with the 3 hr test. I now eat a little avocado every day or so too.

Good luck!

my doc made me fast since midnight the night before of my test...

  • Just want to throw some more info out there.  Avocado is a good addition to a GD diet because it does have a good amount of protein, is a mono fat and can help balance the carbs during a regular meal.  However, I do not believe it would help anyone pass the glucose test.  Let me explain further -- Individuals with GD can eat certain foods to keep their levels "in check" (ie: limit fruits to certain times of the day and only eat a certain amount, eat high protein and balance carbs, no sugar foods, etc).  If I have a piece of chocolate cake it wouldn't matter how many avocados I have (or any other high protein food), my blood sugar is going to rise beyond any normal level and stay up for quite a while.  The glucose test monitors your body's reaction to sugar.  It doesn't matter what food you have in your system before you go in, your body is either going to regulate the sugars or its not.  If your numbers are high or even borderline... it is good to take the 3 hour.  Having numbers close to the cut off means you and your baby could be at higher risk.

Of course it won't hurt to eat avocado before you go in because it can make a good breakfast.  However, it won't help you pass if you do have GD.  I wouldn't want anyone to be disappointed if they chow down on avocado and still end up with GD.  It's not the end of the world.

  • I did not know this.  I love avocados anyway, so this is just a nice benefit.  Thanks for sharing.
