Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is it worth charting now?

We're going to start TTC sometime between Nov and Jan.  I have not yet had a pp AF.  We're thinking about trying the Shettles method to see if we can get a girl (I figure it's worth a shot - I'd like to have one of each, but it won't be the end of the world if I get another boy :)) - and to do that, you need to have an idea of when you're going to ovulate (which is where the charting comes in).

Based on all of that... is it worth starting to chart now? If not, how else can I get an idea of when I'm ovulating, so I can estimate when I will ovulate next? (Can I even do this, if I haven't had AF yet?)

Re: Is it worth charting now?

  • I wouldn't waste your time until you get AF.  Sounds like a lot of work and it could be months until your cycles return.

  • I'm not too sure the rules about charting if you haven't gotten your period yet, I would assume you just diligently check your cm, position, and other signs as well as temping when you wake up.  I would think it would def be worth it esp since you are trying for a girl and would def need to know when you ovulate to do that.  At least getting 2 months worth of charting is better than none.  Good Luck!

Ditto.  Seriously, I've only had 2 PP periods and I'm still a disaster and a half with my charting.  I *think* I'm getting the hang of my cycle again, but I can't be completely sure until FF determines I ovulated and I get my period.  Don't waste your time right now.

  • TCOYF says to chart your temps and check your cervical mucus, the mucus may tell you the most.  It is more talking about prevention though.  Maybe kellymom or fertilityfriend will have info.
  • I want to add, though, that you can TOTALLY look for your EWCM.  I recognized that right away, and sure enough, 2 weeks later I got my 1st PP period.  It should be pretty obvious when you see it.

  • My CM is off the wall.  I have EWCM approximately once a week!

  • My whole reasoning for charting would be because if lets say in December you decided you wanted to start charting, at least by doing it now you'd be ahead of the game.  I guess I'm just stating from personal experience that I'd rather be ahead of the game.
  • I charted in order to conceive DD. I have pondered starting again, to avoid until we are ready in another 6 mo. or so. But, I am confused about night feedings. If you wake to feed LO at 3, would you take your temp then? Or wait until you got up for the day?

     Sorry I hijacked your post!

  • I would probably wait until you get your first PP AF.  I was thinking about charting again but honestly, with DD still not STTN every night I'm not sure how accurate it would be since you need 3 full hours of sleep before taking your temp.  Hopefully soon she either starts STTN more often or I get KU and I don't have to worry about charting at all!

After 3 consecutive hours of sleep is best, and be as consistent as possible.  So if you always wake up to feed around 3 AM and you've slept for 3 consecutive hours, that's fine.  Otherwise, you can wait until you wake up for the day.  Does that make sense?
