We're going into week 2 and he still won't open his mouth for it. We're only giving it him once a day and we started with veggies. So far he's had sweet potatoes, carrots and butternut squash. Feed him solids is a nightmare, he cries, clams his mouth shut and waves his arms. The puree goes flying everywhere. What am I doing wrong?
Re: Why won't LO open his mouth for solids?
He gets a bottle at 5:00pm from daycare right before I pick him up. Then we eat dinner at 6:30pm-7:00pm and this is when I'm feeding him the solids too. Then he gets another bottle right before he goes to sleep at 8:30pm-9:00pm.
His daycare teacher said to bring in the solids and she would feed him during the day. But, since we just started 2 weeks ago and he refuses to eat at home I'm worried about have his teacher feed him. If she feeds him then I won't know how much of it he's actually having.
Try not to stress. Solids are about learning and fun for your kiddo right now - not nutrition. If you get stressed while feeding him, he will pick up on that which will make matters worse.
Just keep trying different things. Let him try feeding himself if you are comfortable with that. Don't worry about what amount goes down the hatch. It's much more important that he be exposed to different things.

Ditto Ncbelle.
Try giving him finger foods and see how that goes. You can try a cracker, a plain broken up rice cake or even a Gerber Veggie Stick. Just keep trying different things and make it fun.
I understand, my DC just writes refused/some/all for solids on her daily sheet so I'm never sure exactly how much she eats either.
I hope he gets the hang of it soon.
