I found out last week from the Dr. that when I give my son my kidney when he's 3 years old that the kidney will only last about 10-15 years and he will need a few more transplant in his future. I was sad and shocked. I thought once I gave him my kidney he's in the clear and can live a healthy normal life. The Dr. said what we are doing is just exchanging one desease for another that is better to maintain. Maaaaan....I have a long road ahead of me now. I can only pray that the kidney last longer.
Re: I just found out he needs more than one transplant :(
Yeah... it's important to keep in mind that a transplant isn't a cure, it's a treatment.
I had hoped that the kidney my mom gave me would last 10+ years, but it only lasted 4, and now I'm back on the list.
In good news, I have a friend who got a transplant (deceased unrelated) 21 years ago, and it's still going strong! And the meds are getting better every day, improving survival statistics and reducing side effects... hang in there!
