Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

moms of boys: penis question

Regular poster going AE here.  I don't want to be "that poster."

Are any of your worried about your LO's penis size?  I am not kidding.

DS's penis seems small -- it basically retreats into this little fat pouch between his legs.  It's like a little turtle.  We have to push it out to clean it.

When he was really little, maybe 2 months, he was very chunky.  At one of his pedi appts, the pedi told me not to worry about it, that as he lost weight, it would seem bigger.  I wasn't worried about it -- in fact, I hadn't even asked!  The fact that she mentioned it first made me worry, though.

As he has gotten older (he's 14 months now), he has slimmed down a bit, but is still pretty pudgy and still has a little fat pouch, and I am still worried about it.  When DH or I clean him for his bath, it seems like his penis is only about 3/4 of an inch to an inch long.  Is this normal?

I am kind of embarrassed to even ask this question.  Go ahead and laugh if you must, but please let me know what you think.  TIA!

  • Why are you worried about his penis being "small?"  Are there certain reasons?
  • It'll grow like the rest of him. Don't worry about it.

  • No, I have never worried about my sons penis size.
  • This has to be MUD. Right?

  • when he gets changed at daycare, do the little girl babies point and giggle at him? if so then yes, its too small.

    ?

come on now! i'm sure he is fine. if its still 3/4 of an inch when he is 16 then you have a problem. on the other hand if he is still letting you look at it when he's 16, then you have an even bigger problem.?

  • When boys are young, their penis naturally retracts into that little fat pouch area/tube area. I have never seen a "well-endowed" baby/toddler penis.?
What are you expecting to see?
  • ::gigglesnort:: i don't even know what to say. this made me laugh. i never thought about my sons penis like that.

    My feelings exactly.

  • There is actually a term for the turtle penis, but I don't remember it now...  I wouldn't worry about it.  As he slims down, I'm sure the fat pouch will go down as well.

    lmao.

OP, I can't believe your pedi brought up your DS's penis size unsolicited. I would definitely give the side eye to any doctor who said that to me.

  • whatever you do dont google micro-phallice. especially if you are at work.
  • I'm not sure what the concern would be...that he would have a small penis as an adult? If this is the case, I'm sure he will survive...there are worse things in the world. He'll still find a wife, have children, etc. But chances are, he'll grow just fine.
  • Hmmm.  I have never worried about this issue.

    oh no.

  • This totally made me LOL.  Sorry, I can tell you're worried, but really, what can you do??  He may just have a teeny weeny peen.   My younger boy is more endowed than my older boy.  DH and I always joke about him getting the shaft.  I'm sure it'll grow as he gets bigger.

Now I have the song short tort man in my head.

  • No, I have never wondered about it, nor will I ever.
  • You're all making me laugh.  I know this is completely ridiculous, and yes, the concern is that he will grow up and have a tiny penis.  Yes, it is stupid.

In all other respects, his pedi is great, but she has given me a penis complex.   I thought only guys got those.

I am glad that no one seems worried about it.

    Carry on.

  • LOL. No, I have never worried about this.  Now in terms of the "turtle penis" as you call it, I did worry about this a little in the beginning because I thought it might have something to do with his circumcision.  But they grow out of that eventually.

  • Now I'm curious who you really are. . .

Anyway, I think you're being overly critical of your son's proportions.  Still, I have heard of the fat pocket and the penis retreating into it, from another mom whose doctor mentioned the same thing.  He still has baby fat, even if he's slimmed down quite a bit, it could be awhile before it all goes away.

  • mine has a hidden penis as well, which is what my pedi calls it. I've asked her about it at every appointment and asked her to look at it and she says that many babies just carry their fat there and once they get really active and their fat redistributes, it should be completely normal. Don't worry about it.
  • I don?t think this is a strange question because my son has the exact same thing going on.  The pedi assured me that his penis size is normal and as he gets older the fatty pad will disappear and it will look normal.  My nephew is a very slim, tall boy at 18 mos and he looks like he is hung like a horse?.so there can be a lot of variation.  My sister always looks at DS funny when she sees me change his diaper since she is used to seeing her sons biggun.  That being said, I?m not really concerned about it.  Genetically speaking, I don?t think he has much to worry about unless he?s an anomaly.

I could have written this word for word.
  • Not to put more in your head but I saw a documentary on a guy who had this issue.  He was a 30-something (maybe older) virgin because he couldn't get it to come out.  He ended up having surgery and all was well with his sex life after that.

I would understand if you were concerned about this but his size I wouldn't worry too much about.

  • LOL! This might be the funniest question ever asked on these boards. I think he's probably fine. hahahahahaha

eta: Oh, and DS has the same "turtle" thing going on. My pedi told me it's really normal, especially for chubbier babies, and it will go back to "normal" as he thins out :)

  • Thanks, ladies.

Except you, soontobeByrne.  Stick out tongue

  • My friends son had this problem and it turned out that he was born with a hernia which is why he looked like he had all balls and no penis. He had to get emergency surgery at 5 months because of lack of blood flow. They saved his turtle! lol
  • I think it's natural to worry about these types of things. K's was the same way back at the peak of chubbiness. It's gotten a lot better lately as he thins out a little, but it's still a little hidden. I'm sure it will look normal in a few years.
  • My friends and I have had this exact conversation.  we all determined what many of the pp's stated. they will grow out of it.

Yeah so MB I quoted you on my FB, again... LOL.

This whole thread is funny... but at the same time I understand the mom's concern. I was going BSC when I delivered DD and her lips were slightly lopsided on one side (they still are actually). All I could do was picture the kids making fun of her in middle school, & it made me cry a couple days later :( The biitchy pedi wasn't doing a thing to reassure me either, saying she had palsy on that particular muscle and it may be permanent. We all want our kids to be "normal" and live normal lives & part of them doing that is to have "normal" features, so I can understand her POV.

    Indifferent

The only time I ever thought about DSs penis was when he was circ and I had to put vaseline on it. This is almost as bad as the labia checking post.

  • I know where you're coming from.  My pedi made a similar comment and I felt almost defensive like, "yeah, I know it will get bigger!"  Really though, it seems pretty common so I'm not worried.  :)

  • I have absolutely no idea but my DS has the same thing going on. Having said that, I have never put that much thought into it and I'm sitting here laughing my fat asss off reading this thread! Seriously. Tears rolling down my cheeks.

I have to disagree with this.... DS' penis has never retracted into anything. It is always hanging/sticking out, you can't miss it.lol. Ask your pedi again if you're concerned. I have read about some DS' penises having some kind of issues... I don't know what it is called, sorry.

  • I think there is nothing to worry about... but I will tell you that the mohel that circumsized Ethan told us that the fat pouch is very common and will slim down as he grows.... he didn't mention penis size, though and I do find it weird that the pedi did....
