Hi everyone! I have a few random questions that I hope you can all help me with.
1. How much was your LO eating around 2 months of age (oz per feeding and/or oz per day if you know)? I'm worried that I am feeding Keaton too much but he always seems hungry and is taking 5-6oz every 3-4hrs....rarely spits up and seems content but everything I read and what others on the 0-6 month board say I am feeding him WAY too much. Pedi says to feed on demand but then says it should be 3-4oz every 3-4hrs. He just screams for more with only 4oz.
2. What do you do to soothe your LO? I'm trying to avoid the pacifier thing plus we tried it and he spits it out right away. I sometimes think I am misunderstanding his hunger cues with his "just needing something to suck on" cues...which could be my cause of so-called "overfeeding" him.
3. Do/did you always feed your LO when he wakes up in the middle of the night or try to soothe them first (at around 2 months of age)? Keaton is waking up every 4-6 hours through the night right now and I'm assuming he is hungry since it has been so long since he ate.
4. When did your LO start rolling over?
5. Does/did your LO grunt all the time at this age? Keaton grunts constantly and keeps us up at night on the monitor.
Re: Random Questions
I can answer some of these, but it's been awhile, so I might not be sure of the answers.
1) By that point he was every 3 hours during the day, and longer at night. I think he was at 4-5 oz. at that point. He started going 5-6 hours at night by 8 weeks.
2) Adam liked the pacifier, but he also had bad colic so he'd just cry and scream a lot too. We used his Bjorn to soothe him and sometimes to get him to sleep.
3) He always woke up hungry, so we just fed him.
4) He rolled back to belly first, around 4-5 months?
5) Totally grunted all the time. We called him a truffle pig because he grunted and snorted like a pig and the way he rooted around for nursing I said he was like the pigs in Europe who snorted and rooted for truffles. We turned the monitor way down. When he woke up, he sure let us know, monitor not needed.
1.) If I remember, DD was eating 3-4 ounces every 2.5 hours at that age, but she was going longer at night, 4-5 hours, so she had about 2 feedings. It was around this age that she started to shove her fists in her mouth to signal she was hungry. Has the pedi told you it's too much specifically? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
2.) We used a paci a little bit, but she spit it out, too, and now only takes it at night. I used the "SHHHH" a lot, singing, and a lot of walking around the house. She wanted to walk, and trying to rock her would not cut it. I was also constantly changing her diaper. It seemed to help. Maybe putting him in a carrier (snuggli, moby, bjorn) would help?
3.) 4-6 hours is good! I knew that DD no longer needed to eat when, at 10 weeks, she woke up and cried, I went to change her diaper, and she fell back to sleep on the changing pad.
4.) Ali rolled back to belly first at a little over 4 months, then belly to back at 4.5. She didn't really get good at rolling over until 5.5-6 months. I think it's becuase she's big.
5.) Yes, DD grunted all the time. We actually turned the monitor off and started sleeping with the doors open. We could still hear her when she needed us, but we slept much better, because her normal sleeping noises weren't waking us up.
1. Bryce was eating about 3 ? ounces at that time every 2-4 hours. He ate closer together in the mornings and then spaced it out in the afternoons.
2. We tried to avoid the pacifier but Bryce would scream when he was done nursing or drinking from the bottle but I was empty and knew he couldn?t be getting more milk he just wanted to suck. So we started to use the pacifier and it made life so much better. When he finishes the bottle or is just sucking on me I just insert the pacifier and is content.
3. At 2 months Bryce was still doing the every 4-6 hours and I would feed him when he woke up. It gradually got longer and longer at night.
4. Between 2 and 3 months he rolled from belly to back but he still hasn?t done back to belly.
5. No Bryce doesn?t grunt but in the morning he makes little whining noises and then stops, he does them in his sleep.
1. How much was your LO eating around 2 months of age (oz per feeding and/or oz per day if you know)? I was feeding her 4 ounces but she was also still eating every 2.5-3 hours. It's just been recently that I've gotten her to go 4 hours (except at night)
2. What do you do to soothe your LO? We got lucky, she really only cried when she was hungry so if she cried we knew what she wanted. She loved and still loves the swing and her vibrating seat or rocking her
3. Do/did you always feed your LO when he wakes up in the middle of the night or try to soothe them first (at around 2 months of age)? I always fed her when she woke up in the middle of the night, like I said it was the only time she cried. At her age now I would try to soothe her but when she was his age I always fed her.
4. When did your LO start rolling over? She didn't do that until she was about 4.5 months old. Even now she doesn't do it very often, she's not a big fan of belly time!
5. Does/did your LO grunt all the time at this age? Yes!!!!!! It's one of the reasons we put her in her crib at 2 weeks old. She would make so much noise at night and with her being in the room with me I always would get up and check on her.
1. He's eating 4 oz every 2.5 hours or so between like 7am & 9pm then he eats again at like 4 or 5 am...also 4 oz. When we upped him to 4 oz before he was spitting up a lot but I think it was the formula and not the amount so we are slowly working up the amount again.I go with the feed on demand thing - if he'll take it at this point, I don't think it's too much.
2. He likes to be bounced up and down while he's standing up or just taking him outside. Sometimes he's screaming his head off and we seriously walk outside and totally calms him down within two seconds. Also, swaddling or putting him in his infant carrier and latching him in. Neither of these necessarily work right away but after the other two don't work we do one of these to calm him. One other thing he likes which sounds kind of wierd is when he's on his belly and lying on my belly I make the "Ommmmmmmmmmm" like you're meditating. The sound and the vibration it kinda makes in you he really seems to like. I hope that makes sense.
3. Since it's so long between feedings, I don't soothe at all and just feed. The less he fusses, the less he wakes up and I'm able to get him right back to sleep.
4. Not there yet but getting close or so it seems (ds will be 2 mos on the 3rd)
5. He does make a decent amount of noise when he's sleeping which we found out last week at the beach. We're not using the monitor bc we can hear him when he cries easily. We are using a white noise machine and it was annoying us listening to it through the monitor.
1. We fed on demand. If he was taking more than 1 bottle a day it was about 3oz every 2-3 hours at that point. Babies are different though. I had a client whose little boy ate 4-6oz every 4 hours. I'd review it with your doctor.
2. Ethan spit out the pacifier then too but it helped when needed. Sometimes I would have to stick my finger in the Soothie to help him hold it in when he wanted to suck. Now he uses MAM pacifiers but only when he is going to sleep or is really, really fussy. It falls out throughout the night so he can sleep w/o it. Some soothing techniques that helped at that age were - keeping him upright and patting his back, carrying him, walking, giving him "air time" (the kid loves to be naked), sitting in his room and watching the ceiling fan, singing ABC's and Wheels on the Bus repeatedly (we're fortunate that he likes other songs now!).
3. We tried soothing Ethan (Matt would go in and pat his back, hold him, and rock him but E was hungry so we fed him.
4. He rolled from belly to back at 3.5 months (14wks old) and from back to belly 2 weeks later.
5. Yes, he growled too. We didn't use the monitor then. We heard him when he woke w/o it.

1. How much was your LO eating around 2 months of age (oz per feeding and/or oz per day if you know)? I think she was eating 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours. She totalled around 17-20 oz a day. If you're concerned about eating, I would ask your doctor. Every baby is different. I remember worrying so much that she wasn't eating enough. Everything I read said they should be eating 2.5 x's their weight. Ex. a 10lb baby should be eating 25 oz. Brynne is 13 lbs and eats around 25oz! And her development is wonderful. Also, I have heard that some babies just need to eat more. A friend had a baby like this. He just turned a year. They started giving him cereal at 3 months (suggested by doctor), because he was eating too much formula in a day (more than 40 oz). DON'T stress yourself out over what's "normal". All babies are different!
2. What do you do to soothe your LO? We used the pacifier. By 2.5 months she just took it to sleep. Now one of the only ways to soothe her is to take her outside. She LOVES to look around and listen to the sounds. She also likes to be sung to....loudly...so she can hear it over her screaming
3. Do/did you always feed your LO when he wakes up in the middle of the night or try to soothe them first (at around 2 months of age)? This is a tough one. DD slept through the night around 5 or 6 weeks. She completely stopped STTN around 2.5 months, so, no. Our first thought was not that she was hungry because she went weeks without wanting to eat at night. I now know this was the beginning of her "wakeful" phase. She mostly just wanted to play, though there were times when she was hungry (she cried instead of whined in her crib out of boredom).
4. When did your LO roll over? She rolled from belly to back at 10 weeks and then back to belly at 15 weeks. She's all over the place now!
5. Does/did your LO grunt all the time at this age? Yep, we call her the Gremlin!
Mine is still eating every 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and he never takes less than 4 oz. when we give him a bottle at night. Our doc and lactation consultant say as long as he's not throwing up a lot, keep feeding on demand.
Our tricks for soothing are me bouncing on an exercise ball while holding him ($6 at Walmart, and it's AMAZING how well and quickly it works) and putting him in a sling I wear (Baby Balboa). The Bjorn worked for him in his first week, but now that he's aware of his arms and legs but unable to control them yet, the dangling scares him and he screams in it. The sling, however, puts him right out and frees up my hands do to laundry, dishes, etc.
Cayden only wakes up at night to eat, so I feed him as soon as he's up. In the early, early morning hours, however, gas wakes him, so I try positioning and massaging him after he eats to get the toots out.
1. How much was your LO eating around 2 months of age (oz per feeding and/or oz per day if you know)? Cole is eating 4 oz. every 2-2.5 hours, so he could even be averaging more than Keaton! He eats 6 oz at night every 4ish.
2. What do you do to soothe your LO? He is a complete bink baby. If he doesn't have his bink, he gets his thumb right in the mouth - Mommy doesn't go for that! When he's really fussy, I hold him tight in my arms, almost like the cross cradle BFing hold - and pat his butt. Does the trick for him everytime.
3. Do/did you always feed your LO when he wakes up in the middle of the night or try to soothe them first (at around 2 months of age)? If he ate an hour ago, we soothe first. If it's been a while, we go right for the food.
4. When did your LO start rolling over? Today! Granted, it took him about 10 minutes, so I'm not sure if it really counts LOL.
5. Does/did your LO grunt all the time at this age? ::listens to grunts through baby monitor:: Yup.
