2nd Trimester

How Many Clothes is Too Many?

I have been fortunate enough to receive hand-me-downs from three different people - and when I say hand-me-downs, I mean their child's entire wardrobe from 0-18 months.  All of the clothes are in awesome shape but there's just SO much of it.

I want to keep plenty of them - the ones I love and make sure I have lots of extras but everyone who gave me the clothes said, "If you find any you don't like, just get rid of them!"  With that in mind, I was considering taking any 'extras' to a consignment shop and trading them in for store credit to get some other "baby gear" that we really need.

Being that I was the "youngest" in my family, didn't have any cousins and this is our first baby, everything baby-related is foreign to me.  That being said, how many clothing "items" should I have for baby?  How many "going out" outfits, onesies, footed pajamas, gowns, sleep sacks, etc?  Thanks so much in advance!

  • Hmmm, I have to think about it for a minute. What kind of seasonal clothes are they too? Will DC be just at home with you? Or will it be worthwhile to have spares at daycare? Keep in mind you'll want a few extras to keep an outfit in the diaper bag, one in the car, maybe a spare at grandma's house, etc. If you have enough the convenience is nice.

This does remind me of all the onesies I had before DS was born. Seriously I had over 30. A friend kept trying to tell me 'you can never have too many'. I beg to differ, it's possible. Did I mention that said friend doesn't have any kids, but believes having nieces and nephews makes her an expert?

Ha-ha.  DC will be just with me - no daycare (at least for the forseeable future).  Grandma lives a few hours away but she will no doubt buy her own outfits to have him in (She's a shopper...)  My brother and his wife live in town and we see them often (at least once a week).  I put together a box for them with some of the extras - onesies, sleepers, etc. in different sizes.  (Along with receiving blankets, bottle, pacifier, etc.)

I would love to take some of the spares that I'm not AS in love with and trade them in for something we could use but I don't know how many we should keep, so can't really do that.

  • Keep more for the 0-6 month stage where they go thru outfits like there's no tomorrow and keep more for the toddler stage once they're walking, playing in dirt, eating every random thing in sight and love to get messy. For the in between stage 6-12 month-ish DD didn't need many clothes b/c she didn't get them very dirty...one outfit a day, pjs could be worn more than once usually. Now she goes thru at least 2 or 3 outfits a day b/c she is in love with dirt and rocks.

For the NB-6 month stage I would say 10-15 onesies in each size, more if you hate doing laundry like I do, less if you plan on washing every other day or whatever. Enough sleepers for the week (will you use them only at night or during the day too?), 7-10 ish and a few going out outfits. Keep the simple comfy cotton pants, onesie sets, those are the best for little babies. I had dresses and overalls for DD and I hated putting them on her in the NB stage so I never did. Keep more going out type outfits for 6+ months as baby will become more mobile and you'll have more of a chance to get out of the house b/c he/she won't be sleeping as much either. HTH

  • Don't ask me I have way too many.  My DD has for this summer about 12 pairs of shorts, 20 or so tops, 6 romper/one piece outfits, 16 or so dresses, and then on top of that, she has about 10-12 two piece outfits of shorts that have a matching top that I didn't count as part of the separates above.

My advice is that you DON'T need that much LOL.
