Am I the only one not freaked out by H1N1?

All this commotion about a flu bug.....wash your hands, people. The flu kills TONS of people every year and people don't make a huge deal about it anymore.

Am I missing something?

Re: Am I the only one not freaked out by H1N1?

  • I'm not. I'm more pissed at the woman visiting my coworker in the next cube earlier today who was hacking up a lung. I don't want to be sick---ANY type of sick.

  • I'm not overly worried about it either. I will get the vaccine since my OB recommends it but I'm not real worried.
  • If you're missing something, then so am I.  I don't get the hype.

  • Yes, you are missing something... LOL

This is not just the regular flue - it's much more serious.  I am worried because there has been multiple school closings here in NY last spring as a result of children getting the swine flu.

I don't plan to get the shot though (guess I am not worried enough then).  I do wish people would stop talking about it though - I don't need to re-visit my fear everyday.

Edit:  Also, my doctor did not seem very concerned when I explained my reasons for not wanting the vaccine.  So - I guess no big deal.

  • I'm with you.  Everything I've read about H1N1 has made it clear to me that it's just another strain of the flu -- take normal precautions against getting sick, and certainly get the regular seasonal flu vaccine, but there's no need to feed into the media hype/hysteria about it.

  • I think some people just need something to freak out over. Seriously, Y2K, 2012, the end of the world, west nile virus, its all just crazy!

I personally am not freaking out over such things, call me crazy, but I could be in a life threatening car crash tomorrow but no one is freaking out over that!

I give you props for not freaking out!

  • I'm not caught up in any mass hysteria over it either - but it does concern me.  The thing that bothers me the most is that it seems to have serious effects on young, healthy people (and pg women), whereas the regular flu is usually more dangerous for the elderly, very young, or those who are already sick.

  • I am SO tired of hearing about this!!! And then there are at least 10 posts a day on here from people freaking out and asking how we're going to handle it. H1N1 go away!

  • I'm actually sick to death of they hysteria.  No one freaks out about the 35,000 in the US who die EVERY year of seasonal flu, not the mention the millions that die annually of diarrheal diseases, malaria, TB etc worldwide. But if 500 Americans die of a new disease it MUST be the new plague Confused

I don't like being sick either, but the reality is that H1N1 is a pretty wimpy virus.  Do I want to get it?  Nope.  And I will be very, VERY cautious about exposure.  Since I have asthma I am already hypervigilant about getting ill, but you know, fastidious hygeine and common sense go a long way in prevention.

  • I'm not and my doc is not. I work with kids too. Like you said- wash your hands and be SMART.
  • I think what freaks people out on here is how this strand of flu is affecting pregnant women. I'm not living in a bubble or anything, but until that vaccine comes out, I'm being extra careful.

But it's really not. The things that are happening to people who get the H1N1 are the same things that happen to a small percentage of people who get the "regular" flu.

    I guess that's why I'm not understanding.

  • I go back and forth.  On the one hand, I think it isn't a big deal.  I'll take preventative measures to avoid getting it but, if I do, I'll get Tamiflu and all will be well.

On the other hand, I know how quickly even the regular flu can turn bad.  I know pregnant women are more susceptible to severe complications from both kinds because we already have an increased level of fluids in our lungs.

Overall, I'm not so worried about my health but I am worried about LO.

  • I'm in the same boat.  It doesn't sound much more different than the regular flu.

I am not getting the vaccine and I watched a thing on the news about pregnant women not getting the vaccine and a doctor said that it didn't make sense because we know the H1N1 flu is coming so you should get vaccinated.  I'm like, no, we don't know for sure that it's coming and we really don't know what the almost untested vaccine will do.  Sorry bud, no.

  • I'm not freaked out about any type of flu. Most of my co-workers are considerate enough to stay home while sick and so am I. I also work at a Dr.s office and we're freaks about sanitizing everything.

  • I'm not worried about it. Like you said, the flu kills tons of people each year and no one gets all freaked out about it! To avoid the mass hysteria, I don't open posts regarding it, I don't listen to the news about it....they tend to blow EVERYTHING out of proportion. If I feel sick, I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

  • I think for the average healthy person, it's not that big a deal.  However, it's been made clear that for people with weakened immune systems (and that includes pregnant women) it is often deadly.  Your immune system is weakened greatly during pregnancy making you more susceptible to illness.

With the last swine flu outbreak in the 70's, a lot of the people who died from it were pregnant women.  That's what has me freaked out.  If I wasn't pregnant right now, I wouldn't be worried about it.  But since I am pregnant, I do worry about catching it and what could happen if I do.

  • Nope.  Just lots and lots of hype.  I'd like to avoid any illness 'cause being sick while pregnant sucks.  But H1N1 is pretty whimpy when it comes to flus.
  • I'm not freaked and won't change my life for it, but my OB does want me to get vaccinated so I will. Frankly I don't want any kind of sickness right now, so whatever I can do to help that is what I'll do.
  • Not to sound all "conspiracy theory" but the gov't and media likes people to be all worked up about things.  Maybe they're trying to blind us to something larger going on... who knows.

I never freaked about the regular flu so why worry about H1N1...??? I take the universal precautions for everything generally so... que sera sera.  I actually probably won't even get the vaccine, I just don't see the point really.  I've had the flu once in my whole life and aside from that I am rarely sick; I have an amazing immune system.

Like I said, que sera sera.  Not worth getting my panties in a twist about it.

  • I am not bugged by it either but everyone one around work is freaking out.
  • You make a good point - we certainly shouldn't be freaked out about it (though I've had my moments), but it's still a good idea to be cautious. I was in a meeting with reps from my county health department, and here are a few tidbits their docs shared.

    - H1N1 is a "mild clinical illness" that primarily effects adolescents and young adults, who are succumbing in large numbers but not necessarily dying
    - The reasons for concern are that:
       * H1N1 has "novel genetics" which equals a rapid spread. Our young people's immune systems have never been exposed to this virus before. The virus is "uniquely capable of spreading quickly" - much more so than the seasonal flu. While H1N1 is about 100x less deadly than seasonal flu, the rapid spread may lead to higher death rates merely because of the significant number of people infected.
       * H1N1 has a habit of changing its behavior (i.e. mutating)
    - The estimate is that 30-50% of our population will be infected with H1N1 during a 6-8 week period of the flu season. Those infections will be across the spectrum, with some fatalities particularly in older teens and young adults.

This. Yes I suppose I might be slightly more concerned if I weren't a SAHM, but I stay at home pretty much all the time, and DH is a hand-washer...so I'm not too worried. I'd only be slightly more concerned if I went out in public more because you can't keep the people that don't wash their hands from exposing you...the only thing you can do is wash your own hands and sanitize what you can.

  • I'm not freaked out but I am cautious.  I already know the boys will bring all sorts of things home from school so we try to wash more, etc.

I'm still debating whether or not to get the H1N1 or even a regular flu shot.

This completely! My husband works in health care and the flu kills more people a year than H1N1 has... and as for it being bad for people with weakened immune systems - all viruses are!! Its not just H1N1...

I'm so sick of the fear-mongering over this! I'm just going to get vaccinated. Done.

  • Maybe you would be slightly more concerned if you had to take care of young people on ventilators dying of "just some new flu". We currently have four VERY sick people on oscillators at our hospital and it makes me very nervous. These are otherwise young healthy people. The course of the illness is pretty scary up-close and in person.

Being on the front line in the hospital is making me very nervous about what is going to hapen this winter.

Well said. I work in a Pulmonary Office where the Drs. here are also the Critical Care Drs.in our hospital, and knowing what they are seeing in the ICU and CCU does have me concerned.

  • I'm not really worried either. I'm still on the fence about the vaccine. My OB recommends it, but I'm just being much more aware of what I touch in public places and never leave the house without hand sanitizer.
  • For what it's worth, I AM a little tired of hearing about H1N1. Still, I think those of you who say it's the same as the "regular" flu aren't quite correct--the risks of H1N1 for pregnant women are much greater than the risks of the regular flu to pregnant women. And actually, any type of flu can be deadly if you're pregnant.

The reality is that I'm not a medical expert. I rely on my doctor for medical advice. My doctor tends to be pretty sane about which pregnancy related concerns are mostly hype (i.e. avoiding deli meats and not sleeping on your back). Yesterday, he told me that he is VERY concerned about his pregnant patients and H1N1, and very strongly recommended that I receive the shot when it is available. Maybe it's a different circumstance where I live, as there have been quite a few confirmed cases of H1N1 locally....

Most people I know in the medical profession are pretty concerned about H1N1...and like I said, I'm not a medical expert, so I'll take my cues from them.

Anyway, here's an article from CBS about H1N1 and Pregnancy

I had it at 14 weeks pregnant, and passed it on to my husband, kids, and fellow residents at the hospital. Both my OB and Pedi were glad we had gotten it and been exposed to the antibodies for future protection. The kids and I are just fine, and it was no worse than getting the seasonal flu

But it's really not. The things that are happening to people who get the H1N1 are the same things that happen to a small percentage of people who get the "regular" flu.

This. I think its kinda strange not to be concerned....refusing to see the risk that it does pose for us since we are pregnant is kinda dumb to me. I am a nurse taking care of folks who are sick with this....yes, the regular flu is rampant and killed people plenty of times, but this particular flu is reaking havoc on pregnant women.....something we all are.
