Detroit Babies

How did you choose your pediatrician?

I'm doing the peds vists and so far I've only gone to two off the list that my OB recommended.  If you have already decided on a pediatrician, how did you decide?  The first office I went to I didn't get to meet the drs. but the staff was so kind, helpful, and I liked how things were handled.  The 2nd I met with one of the 4 drs. and she seemed sort of ditzy and the staff was just ok but I liked the fact that they see the baby every 2 days after birth until they are back to their birthweight (I'm going to breastfeed) and they will automatically write me a script for a pump after the baby is born so my insurance will cover.  Plus they had the seperate sick/well waiting rooms.  How can I choose an office that I didn't get to meet the drs....maybe they are just as ditzy as the one I met from the other office?  I could only imagine how hard it would be if I met with a 3rd... or maybe I should?  Please share your thoughts!

Re: How did you choose your pediatrician?

  • I have no advice as to picking b/c my sister is a pediatric opthamologist so we went with who she recommended in our area based on recs from childrens hospital.

I wanted to say though that I am not sure what insurance you have but I had a heck of a time finding a medical supply store that carried the pump I wanted (medela pump in style) so call around before babies comes and figure out how much your insurance pays toward it. So than DH can just run out and get it right away. I found Binsons medical supply worked with the most insurances (I have BCBS) and had a good variety of pumps.

  • Wow, you lucked out on the pediatrician hunt!  May I ask who you are going with?

As far as the pump goes, I have to get it from Wright & Filippis for my insurance to cover it.  But, good tip, I should call them to confirm they have the one I want incase I need to start researching others!  I also have BCBS.. I wonder why you and another girl I know were able to get their pumps from Binsons?

  • I just based my decision on recommendations.  You see certain practices always mentioned and talked about in high regards, so obviously that's a good sign.  First impressions are good, but most of your questions/concerns won't be answered until you actually see them in action.  And remember- there's nothing holding you back from changing doctors at any point.  If you aren't comfortable even after the first visit, then switch.

  • we are going with mali and mali. They are located across from troy beaumont. If I talk to my sister soon I can ask her if she has any recs for your area. Royal oak I am assuming is the area you want to be in??

I don't get how insurance companies work. My coworker has the plan one step below me and she only got a portion covered and had to go to a certain place to. Maybe call again and ask. Can't hurt. Maybe that person was wrong? lol.

  • Yes, I'm in RO.  That would be great if you could ask.  I have a list from my OB but not sure that means much, although I do trust my OB.

Maybe your coworker has the same plan I do?  I get 80 percent covered and have to go to a certain place.  But yes, you are right, calling again wouldn't hurt!

     Thanks!!!!

  • DH and I got recs from people at his work.  Many of the other teachers use Mali and Mali out of Troy Beaumont, and my OB had heard good things about them too.  We made a consultation with a doctor in their office and she was great...very helpful and informed...and it was a major bonus that they see babies delivered at both Troy and Royal Oak Beaumont.  When DS was born, we really liked the other female ped who was on call and we've been seeing her ever since.

  • I found mine through a lady I used to work with.  She takes her kids there and she was referred by her SIL, who had also been referred by a neighbor.  So they came highly recommended.
