I have seen a few people on here and other places talk about waiting for the umbilical cord to stop pulsating before cutting it. What is the reason behind that?
The placental blood is rich in oxygen and nutrients. Just a way of getting that last bit into the baby.
This. If you cut it before, you are just wasting it. Also, it can splatter all over whoever cuts the cord. It's just good practice to let the baby get all the blood they need from the cord.
Agreed with PP's but also if you are planning on donating or banking the blood it's the best time to get it out of the cord.
I'm donating my cord blood and they said it's perfectly fine to use the placenta cord after you deliver the placenta. We'll be doing that to allow the cord to stop pulsating and DH to cut it.
Do places normally wait or do you have to request that they wait?
You have to request it...and I've heard some hospitals won't actually allow it.
You have to request it, and if either you or the baby need immediate medical attention, they'll cut the cord right away. I wanted to let the cord stop pulsing, and I was really ticked at my OB for clamping it right away, but then she pointed out that I was hemorrhaging.
