Cat owners: Have you tried foil to keep the cat

off the baby's items? She hasn't shown any interest in getting in his crib, stroller, car seat, or pnp until recently..I've heard you can lay a peice of foil in whatever you are trying to keep the cat from getting into (i guess the sound is supposed to scare the cat?) Has anyone tried this?

Re: Cat owners: Have you tried foil to keep the cat

  • I tried a grocery sack and it didn't work. He just laid on it. My cat is very strange, though.

Definitely try it on one item before wasting a ton of foil.

  • Yes, and it works. And closer to the EDD we are filling the crib/bassinet with inflated balloons to add even more scare factor. We have three cats and we really need the "cats off" idea to be driven home.
  • I put foil in the crib and it worked like magic. I have three cats that are into everything but only one of them jumped into the crib and then freaked out and ran away. I don't know what he told the other two but they run by the crib without even looking at it Wink
  • We put some in our pnp because our cats used it as a bed.  After seeing it they haven't even tried to jump in it.  I guess the sound is supposed to scare them, but apparently just the look of it does the job in my house.

  • Is it possible for you to just keep the LO's things in a nursery with the door closed?  We go in there once a day and the cats can explore and sniff around.  Every time they try to jump in the crib they get scolded.  Foil didnt work and ended up just sort of seeming cruel b/c it scared them at first but they could just move it to the side.

Once LO comes the cats will likely hide and either be scared of LO or pout.

  • It works because it's slippery and they like to be stable.  We don't have inside cats, but my IL's have 9 inside cats and have to do this all the time.

  • That would work. They aren't supposed to like the texture of the foil; if you lay it out without smoothing it. Bubble wrap or duct tape sticky side up would work too. The tape can get stuck to things though. Both foil and tape worked to train mine about the kitchen counter.

  • dude- my cat tries to eat foil so yeeeeah- no go.

i didn't want to lay out the foil & come home to a dead cat- but for normal cats i'm pretty sure it works.

  • My cats would just play with it.  We're installing a screen door at the entrance to the nursery to keep the cats (and the dogs) out of the baby's room.  It will still allow them to see, hear, and smell everything that's going on in there, but keep them and their hair out of the nursery.  You can get a screen door at Home Depot for around $75.  We think it's the simplest solution.
  • Yeah. The tin foil worked for me. The baby's crib has been tinfoled for about a month now. I tapped on the tinfoil when the cats were in the room and they scattered.

I also hung pieces of tin foil on the sides of the pack in play so they wouldn't scratch at the netting on the sides and they completely avoid it now. It looks crazy but it works.

good luck. Hope it works for you too.

  • It worked for one of our cats. Another one - not so much, but she will always choose to sit on plastic/paper/in a box/etc. when given the chance.

I've also heard balloons will work.  I haven't tried that.  I'm thinking a baby will work.

  • It's worked everywhere for me so far. IMO keeping the door closed is unrealistic, they have to get trained sometime. They like to hang out under the crib, and I'm ok with that.

  •   It worked for one of my cats, but he's 15 and is scared of everything.  My other cat is on crack and like to chew on and play with foil, so no dice there.  However, my 1 year old nephew was at our house last week, and both cats were really scared of him and hid the whole time he was at our house, so I'm not as worried.
  • Foil works fabuluosly for cats my dogs not so much so its a lot of yelling "NO!" They are used to the baby's room being off limits though.
  • I didn't have to. Our cat jumped in the crib when I first set it up but hasn't shown any interest in it yet. Beneath the crib, though, that's another matter!

The changing pad is her favorite baby item -- she thinks it's just a bigger cat bed. I keep a towel on it to control the cat hair and figure that once an actual baby has claimed it, she'll either leave it alone or I'll end up shoving her aside to change diapers.

This.  Harry & George Kittens are bizarre.  if it makes a lot of noise they want to play with it.  Foil, paper, bags, water...  doesn't matter.  We don't have our crib yet so I'm not sure if they will want to be in it.  I kind of figure that the baby is going to grow up with cats so I'm not that concerned about it.

  • It worked for three of them. ?The fourth just laid on the foil and ate it.

  • We put tin foil in the crib but our cats have shown zero interest in the crib so I don't know from first hand experience if it works.  However other people with cats had recommended it to us, saying it worked for their cats.
  • My SIL did foil and sticky sheets (from the lint roller)--the cat tried once and was very traumatized!  Hasn't tried since!
