2nd Trimester

Sooo, if travel systems aren't recommended...

Can you buy a car seat that works with your stroller or is this not important? We were thinking about a travel system but I keep reading mixed reviews about how they're not necessary and overpriced?

Re: Sooo, if travel systems aren't recommended...

  • We purchased a metrolite stroller and snugride for DD.  They were not sold as a travel system in the print we got.... we've gotten a lot of use out of both pieces.  And as luck would have it, the way they were priced, they cost less together than most of the travel systems did.

I think it really depends on what kind of stuff you do whether or not it would be worthwhile for you.

DD is small... she fit into the infant carseat for over a year.... most babies will fit for at least the first several months (4-6).  The stoller can be used much much longer.  At the beginning, DD only wanted to be carried... she hated the stroller, but as she's gotten a little older, she's preferred being in the stroller.  For me, it was worthwhile.

  • Yes you can. The Graco snugride 32 works with many brand strollers, some you need to buy an adaptor bar. The Chicco Keyfit 30 works with some other strollers. Or, you could just get a stroller with a full recline and not use the infant seat at all. A stroller frame like the Snap N Go is also a great idea for an infant seat, and then you can transition to any stroller you like when LO gets too big for the seat.

  • We bought an Uppababy stroller and a Chicco Keyfit 30 car seat.  There is a car seat attachment you can buy that fits on the frame of the stroller so you can just snap the car seat to the stroller frame.

The only negative thing I have heard about travel systems is that they are bulky and heavy.  I would just go to the store and test them out to see what you think of them.  GL!

  • I haven't registered for our stroller or car seat yet, but DH and I have done some research. Personally, I think the travel systems are too clunky and heavy. We're now looking at the lightweight strollers that accept car seats (some brands do, some don't). You're probably going to have to buy two car seats anyway - one when your LO is an infant, and a larger one when he/she gets bigger. At least with some strollers, you can get away with using them throughout...
  • We bought a stroller we loved then got the adapter for the carseat we registered for.  It makes it like a travel system but I like my stroller better than anything Graco puts out.

  • I was convinced we wanted a travel system -- I loved the idea of the carrier as well as a stroller LO can grow into. I had my heart set on one particular system, just based on reviews, price and looks. Once I got to BRU and was able to see it in person and test it out, I ended up registering for a completely different one. It really helped to go to the store and try them out -- unhook the carrier, fold the stroller up...but only use one hand. See how well they work for you.

While I was looking at the travel systems, some random guy and his wife (and their 6 month old) came up to me and told me not to bother -- that they were bulky and unncessary. I just smiled and nodded while he went into detail about how his son is 6 months old and already using an umbrella stroller. All I could do was smile and nod.

  • We, like a pp, have the Graco metrolite stroller and a snugride seat. Even though DS has been in a convertible car seat for a while, I still use the metrolite stroller exclusively. We have a chicco umbrella stroller and NEVER use it. I was told to register for it b/c we would want something lighter and less bulky. but I find the metrolite just as easy to use, get DS in and out of, and I like that there is the big basket underneath b/c we can't go anywhere without sippy cup, snacks, toys, etc. There is not storage under the umbrella so I end up carrying everything and it's a PITA.

I plan on using the snugride for DD#2 and hopefully finding a graco quattro duo (no small thing) on craigslist, which has room for a toddler and the infant seat.

  • based on our lifestyle (city dwellers with lots of walking, stairs, etc), based on Baby Bargain reviews, based on newer moms I know, we're going with a Graco Snugride infant car seat and the Graco Snugride carseat frame stroller. Both are super light weight and compact. Together that will cost about $170, cheaper than most travel systems and much less bulkier, much less light weight. The only downside is that we'll have to get a convertible car seat and regular stroller later down teh road (more $$) but we've really researched all this and find this the best way to go for us.

  • We picked out a Snug Ride for the infant car seat and a BOB Revolution stroller. You can buy the infant car seat attachment for the Revolution to fit it on there. They were both rated on or near an A in Baby Bargains.

  • We have gone for the Quinny Buzz stroller and the Maxi-Cosi Mico car seat.  The stroller chair removes completely and the car seat clips in.  I know a few people who have these and they all love them, although the stroller is quite pricy.

  • I have a chicco travel system I used for my son and will use for this baby. He was in the infant seat until about 8 months old then in a convertible seat he is still in at nearly 3 years old. I also got a smaller chicco stroller that folds like an umbrella stroller to start to use at about 6 months old for short trips to the mall or when I didnt want to take the big stroller. I know travel systems arent cheap, mine was $300 but its almost 3 years old and I use the big travel system stroller nearly everyday for walks, etc. If I would have bought seperately I would have spent more money because the bases alone are $75 for this car seat.

Its hard to tell what will work for your needs but I can tell you that having a nice stroller that is roomy for the child and has a nice tray for you and basket is essential if you take weekend trips, walks at night, etc.

  • we heard horrible things about travel systems but after testing them out I don't think the chicco one is bad at all. So we're going to do that, the reviews were pretty good overall too.

This is exactly what we're doing.  Carseat and a stroller frame.  When baby starts to outgrow the carseat, DH and I will shop for a lightweight stroller.

Yes, it's another purchase you have to make, but I'm completely new to this - so the idea of going back to the baby stores knowing exactly what I want after baby is here and we've gone for some excursions sounds very appealing.
