We have been seriously talking about banking our baby's cord blood but the only thing that's been holding up back is the price. It's about $2,000.00 for the 1st year and then you pay a yearly store fee of about $125.00 per month.
There's also an option where you can pay for 20 years worth of storage in stead of payment monthly and it saves you around $600.00 but it's $2,000.00 for the first year and then the lump sum for 20 years of storage is another $2,000.00 so you are looking at a total of $4,000.00 for 20 years of stored cord blood.
$4,000.00 is nothing in measurement of saving your child's life from a life threatening disease or condition. On the other hand it's a gamble. Like an insurance policy. You never know if you are going to need it but have the peace of mind knowing you'll be OK if something happens.
Thoughts?
Re: Are you cord blood banking?
It's just not something that we can afford to do.
We will be delaying the cord clamping.

This is still a very young practice and there are reports of the blood being stored wrong and I don't have a lot of faith in sciences this new.
And $125.00 every month is a lot to my family. Especially in this bad economy.

Aside from being pricey, many studies show that your babies cord blood down the road may not even help them. I think there is a very small % o people who will ever need to use it and even smaller for those who can. I have provided a link below for more reading. My suggestions is to talk to your OB about the pros and cons and to do your homework.
Personally, I donated mine.?

"But is banking worth it for most people? The banks argue that it's a form of "insurance" in case your children ever get sick. However, many medical associations -- like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists -- don't support the practice for most people. They say that possible benefits are too remote to justify the costs."

Actually, you're suppose to be able to use a baby's cord blood for siblings and other immediate family members. We considered doing it when we have our last child because there will be more studies done by then. We will not be doing it for this baby because there is so much that is not proven yet and that's a lot of money for us to gamble with.
I have a family history of Type 1 Diabetes and as a PP said, recent research has made significant progress related to using cord blood to cure this type of diabetes so we are doing it.
If we did not have a family history of a disease we would not be doing it.
This.
DH is a doctor, researched banking and came to the same conclusion. We will be donating if they offer that where I'll be delivering.
