A video monitor is not a necessity, but I highly recommend it--we love ours. When Warner makes a weird noise, I can just look at the monitor rather than go into his room to see what he's up to.
Also, we've taken it with us when we've gone out of town and it's been great.
we have the Summer Video Monitor and it has saved us many times from getting out of bed to see what the commotion is about. Definitely not a neccesity to have the video but very much enjoyed in our house since DD is a very loud sleeper.

We have the Graco Ultra Clear II 49mhz Baby Monitor and it works great for us. I think it's a good deal if you don't want to spend a lot of money and if you just need a sound monitor.
we didn't want to spend the $$ on a video monitor and have the regular Graco one; the only thing is that after about 6 mo the battery started dying if it was out of its base. so now we keep both of the receivers in their bases
We also have the Summer handheld video monitor - it's great. My only complaint is the battery - it's short-lived so I have to keep it plugged in all the time.
They have a 2 parent version as well (2 listening sets). If I had known that, i would have gotten that one. It would be helpful for the au pair when Bunny is napping and she wants to do laundry. I think she is not comfortable getting the monitor from beside my bed.
Re: Rec'd a baby monitor
We have two of these, one for each kid:

I never considered a video monitor - maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

I love our monitor. It's not a video, but I hear every sigh Bunny makes in her sleep.
When she sleeps with the windows open, I can hear the conversations our neighbors have 2 houses away. It's pretty sensitive.
