Anyone try "Your Baby Can Read"?

Re: Anyone try "Your Baby Can Read"?

  • I haven't tried it, mostly because I don't really like my DD to watch TV, even if it is educational.  It seems strange to me to use the TV to teach them to read.  I also doubt it is really reading for comprehension/enjoyment. More rote memorization.  I want my kids to discover the joy of reading when they are developmentally ready to appreciate it and be excited about it.

FWIW, I do "teach" my DD letters, numbers, what sounds letters make, etc, but I do it by reading books with her and working it into our everyday life.  I'd rather she was reading and playing at this age than watching tv.  I don't see the point, really, of teaching a baby to read.

  • as a teacher and a reading specialist I can tell you not to waste your money.  This is teaching memorization.  Children need to be able to rhyme, recognize letters and sounds, and have concepts of print before they can read.  There is no need to rush your child to read just so you can say "my 3 year old can read".  At this stage they learn best through play, not flashcards.
