BFing Plus Size Bra Moms Q

I am trying to find a good nursing bra for when LO comes-- I started out this pregnancy as a 38 D or DD and am now a 42-44 F.  Most of the F cups I am finding, such as from Medela, have underwires.  Are underwires too painful when you first start breastfeeding?  Would the underwire be the best option for a bra?  Can you recommend your favorite nursing bra?  (I am also going to repost this on 0-6.)  Thanks so much in advance ladies!!

  • I got a couple of Bravado nursing tanks that I really like.
  • Hard to say what size you should get. You could go up a cup size or two by the time your milk comes in or you could stay the same.

The underwire thing is personal prefrence along with the fact that a poorly fitted one could cause blocked ducts and lead to infections.

I would suggest getting some of the sleeping bras for now and waiting a bit longer ( maybe week or two after baby) to get nursing ones.

  • ya I heard that underwire bras arent good for breastfeeding early on like at least the first month or so....which sucks cause when they are big you need the support. I ordered from bravado a few nights agot...I have no idea how they will be? hopefully good because 2 bras and a nursing tank cost me about 120 bucks! also a day or so ago I posted a bravado coupon code look for the post or type bravado coupon code into yahoo. It saved me about 20 bucks

    good luck!?

  • Sorry went in the wrong direction with reply..... Plecenta brain.

I have some from Motherhood but I guess alot of people hate their bras.

  • Thanks so much for the info and the coupon code suggestion!!

  • There is a store here that specializes in BF bras.  She told me to wait for a month before my due date to buy a bra for nursing.  Unfortunately at 28 weeks I have gone from a 34C to a 36DDD and so ended up getting some nursing bras from her (because they are the only ones that fit and didn't hurt).  La Leche League makes some good bras in larger sizes, but I was also told no wires for the first few weeks of BF'ing as it can cause clogged milk ducts.
  • I never had a problem with underwire. And the getting a size or two up for when milk comes in does not nec. apply for big chested women to begin with.  I never changed size throughout pregnancy or bfing and trust me I could have fed a small army I had tons of milk.
  • I bought some cheaper bras at walmart. I could sleep in them and had no problems. I am not sure what size cup they go up to but they do have larger bands. I am a 40 D and found some that fit.
  • I started off with inexpensive plus size sports bras with my DD and will do the same thing again til the girls settle on a size, lol.

  • I'm a 38DDD (up from a 34D pre-preg.)and totally uncomfortable without a wire, and feel all saggy looking.  i got the lacy nursing bras from target and have been wearing them for the past week. they feel like body armor to me, being used to something sexier, but the support is good and they are really comfortable, especially for $16.99.  I got the sleep bras too, and tried them out, and found them really comfortable as well, but I'm still not sold on being out in public w/out an underwire bra on.
  • Here is a link to a website I have used links off of before.  She has links on there for bras, etc- with some recommendations.

I cannot remember what site I ordered one for with DD #1- but they were fabulous to deal with, even though I had to return it because it was the wrong size.

Ask the lactation nurse at the hospital (even before delivery) who they recommend, and what the guidleines are on underwires.  I think PPs are right about waiting, but us busty gals are usually uncomfortable without a wire unloess the fabric is very firm.
