Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Where do you draw the line (re extended bfing)?

In your opinion, when do they become too old to bfed?

  • when they are old enough to run up to their mom and lift up her shirt as a feeding cue
  • Loading the player...
  • When they say "titty please."

a one year old could do that......

I would probably say 2-3, but it depends on the child.

  • IMO-i would stop around 12-18mo...but that's just me

I absolutely used to think that... Until my 9mo old started pulling down my shirts and tank tops.

Now, I think I'd draw the line FOR MYSELF at 2-ish. But we're (sadly) weaning now, so I won't have to deal with that....

  • I plan to stop by 18 mo.  Probably earlier since we want to TTC#2 around a year - but the line is drawn at 18 mo.

can't some 1 year olds do that?

ok good point.  maybe 18monthsish then.

  • I posted below that I read someone babies loose the enzyme to digest milk by age 3 so I think around that age.  I think in most other countries it's perfectly normal to BF until age 3.

  • If I was still BF'ing I'd be done by a year old, but that is me.

Honestly, if someone really wants to BF their kid forever, that is their thing.  But if I see you doing it I'm totally gonna judge and I'm giving the side eye.

Yeah. DS is already starting to tug on my shirt... uh oh.

I think if they are young enough to drink out of a bottle, they are young enough to nurse. I know a few 18-30 month olds who still have bottles. I'm hoping to stop around 18 months (give or take 6 months).

  • After the second birthday.  Even that seems a bit old but not quiet TOO old...

  • I'm not sure if this matters to anyone else, but in the Bible the normal age to wean was around 3 years old.  This is the age they think Hannah dedicated Samuel (because she was had finally weaned him).

I just find that interesting.  Back in those times they didn't have all of the alternatives to BM and cow's milk wasn't always available.  It's like they just knew that at 3 children stop making the enzyme that digests milk and knew to wean them then.  ;)

  • I would say when they are old enough to talk to their friends about it.  We had a little boy in our preschool class that was telling all his friends about how he "drank milk from his mom"  We mentioned it to his mom and he said oh yeah, we still do that.  He used to sit on her lap for a little while when she dropped him off in the morning and he sat with his hand stuck down her shirt.  I think that's a little much.
