3rd Trimester

anyone else predicted to have a bigger baby?

My doctor told me today that she anticipates at least an 8 pound baby. Most likely between 8 and 9 pounds. She said I won't need to schedule a C section unless it goes to 10 pounds. Does anyone else feel huge?

Re: anyone else predicted to have a bigger baby?

  • How far along are you?

Why does she predict a big baby?

  • My ILs told me the other day that they are taking bets that our LO is 10 lbs. My doc has said nothing though. Gotta love IL's
  • Maybe I'm just weird ... but I don't think 8 lb is that huge of a baby. I think 7-8 lb is average/decent size, no?

I mean 9, 10, 11 lb ... those are big, lol. But they have been done vaginally, no?

I agree.  If Rory ends up being under 9 lbs, I will be thrilled.

  • 37 weeks along....i guess it just sounds kinda big, but you're right. It's not like it's 10 lbs !
  • LO was predicted to be 5lbs 14 oz at our 35 week appt. If she had gained 1/2 lb per/week it would put her close to 9 lbs. But those things can be off. He didn't mention anything about having to consider a c-section at all.

  • At our OB office, ive seen two different women over the course.. one said 10lbs, one said 8lbs...

at the hospital all through labor they said 9-10lbs and then i had to have a c-section, unplanned

he was 7lbs 10oz, just sat funy inside me to guess

  • I originally asked my NP when I would start to hear what size my LO would be.  She said it's such a guessing game because you can't "weigh" a baby in the womb.  Nothing was ever said about it again but I knew I'd probably have a larger baby.  My mom had larger babies- 9lb 9oz and 8lb 12oz and my SIL had a 9lb 4oz baby last year. Once in the hospital, the doctor on call did measurements and estimated high 8lbs, low 9lbs but that she could be as much as 10% off.  My family took bets all in the range of 9lbs 5oz.  I had him vaginally and he was 10lbs 5oz!!!!!  It's hard to tell.....

  • First of all...I do not think that 8lbs is large at all!

I was given the prediction that if I go to 40 weeks (which looks doubtful) then the baby will be between 9-9.5lbs.I guess that's big for me (5'2" 125lbs pre-pregnancy) based on how they reacted!

I have never heard a doctor say that you have to talk c-section for a 10lb baby!! My mom (she's a midwife) just had a woman deliver and 11.5lb baby with no drugs and a minimal tear.   It can be done!

  • Last week, mine was measuring in the 77th percentile.  They estimated at 6lbs. 8ozs. and I was 35 weeks.  That would put me in the 8-9 lbs range.  We will wait and see how accurate they are.
  • In combination with the u/s and the fact that dh was 9.5 lbs when born I am likely to have a big baby but I am still having him vaginally but probably early because of PTL. I would not opt for a cs unless absolutely necessary. BTW LO is in the 93rd percentile.
  • Yes, our midwife is predicting a big baby. My daughter was 7 pounds, 15 ounces when she was born at 37.5 weeks. This time around, there is no medical reason to induce early, so going to 40 weeks or beyond should result in a 9 pound baby. Or bigger. Midwives tend to deliver bigger babies because they don't/can't induce on or near the due date for convenience. Smile

I was 9.5 pounds and an easy vaginal delivery for my mom, so I'm not worried about baby's size. I feel huge, but I'm dealing with it.

I get biophysicals done weekly (u/s) since I'm high risk and the u/s tech can tell weight of baby based on the u/s. Just last week, they told me baby weighs 4lbs.

  • Keegan was 10lbs, they thought I had extra amniotic fluid. I had naturally, drug free..... not on purpose though, there wasn't enough time for an epi.

  • I found out Friday that my LO is measuring 2 weeks ahead of schedule. They are predicting that she is 7lbs but I know that the ultrasound could be off by a pound. I was told all the time at the end of my pregnancy with DD that she was going to be a big baby. She ended up being exactly 8lbs which to me wasn't huge. I'm hoping the same happens with this one.

Those weights are estimates, just like everybody else's u/s weight estimates. I've had an 11lb boy and a 9lb 14oz girl, and I'm guessing this guy at 10 1/2 lbs.

  • Hmm...my daughter was 8lbs 2ozs and she came out within 15mins of pushing with only needing two stitches afterwards. My doctor said she was  good sized baby, but he never made it seem like she was BIG. Now this little fellar on the other hand is measuring at 8lbs already and I still have three weeks to go, so he may be a little bigger, but the doctor doesn't seem to worried about the possiblity of him topping out at 10lbs.
