Well folks, looks like Audrey Pie has another ear infection. I've lost count but this is 5 or 6 since April. I'm DONE. She is going to the Dr tomorrow (couldnt get us in today) and I am insisting on an ENT for BOTH kids, since you know Gabers will have one within the week(his nose started running clear this morning -- audreys is goopy, and for my kids goopy nose=ears every.single.time)
She had PT this morning and the therapist mentioned that she didnt think either kid hears all of what we are saying to them, and that she would expect my kids to have more language than they do at this point. (so do I)
Anyone have any experience with hearing loss due to ear infections? Did tubes help? and problem solved?
thanks
B
Re: ear infections and hearing loss
While I haven't dealt with it directly, my Dad had this problem with my youngest brother. I wasn't around much as they live in a different state, but I'll give you want I can remember.
Little bro had MANY ear infections. Still wasn't speaking by age 2 1/2 - 3 years old I believe. (don't get me started on why it took them so long to have him checked out!). When they finally did, they realized he wasn't speaking because he wasn't hearing due to the many infections he'd had. He had tubes put in (I'm not sure what other measures they took) but I know the tubes helped A LOT! I think he had to have a couple sets put in and I think he had them for quite some time, until he stopped getting ear infections. He now hears and speaks fine though!
Tubes have made a big difference with Nathan if as far as his responsiveness to sounds.
How much are they talking? Nathan is still at Mama, sometimes dada, a lot of bbababababab, attempts to say "dog" and he says "yum" (not mmmm). I have no idea if this is on target or not.
If I could get your e-mail address I would love for you to talk with my sister in law. She has been going through this and has some really important information that I think you could benefit from. Or you could e-mail me. massage.girly@hotmail.com
How much language are they expecting at barely 1 year old??? At Ben's 15 month appt, he BARELY said any words... maybe (MAYBE?) Ma-ma.. and definitely uh-oh and no. And that's it. and no one was concerned with that at all. And now he is a chatterbox.
I have personally had ear infections that made me not be able to hear. So I would guess/hope that getting rid of that cycle would help them hear better... good luck with the ENT!
No I'm wondering if he's behind. Remind me again that he is younger than the twinks and the pedi thinks we should give him a few weeks leeway on things because of the premature birth.
For you guys with 1 year olds who aren't saiyng much, that's TOTALLY NORMAL! Seriously. Don't stress. Especially for boys. Go do the Ages and Stages questionnaire and it will help you evaluate what "they" think a 1 year old should be doing...

I'm with Jill on the language aspect. At 18 months DD said very little, and we started sign language because we were not communicating. She had a few words, but not a lot, and the pedi was a little concerned, but I didn't want to have her hearing evaluated until she was 2. Well, 2 came around and DD turned into a little chatterbox.
Ear infections do suck, and I hope you are able to do something about it.
My girlfriend had both her kids have tubes put in due to ear infection after ear infection... I swear the week after she had them in her oldest son's ears, he started talking more and mumbles turned into clear(er) words. He also became a lot less clumsy. Ear infections can mess so many things up. The surgery is so minor, I bet it'd be worth it.
Keep us posted. Hang in there!!
