Preemies

1st birthday (if your baby was born in winter)

Most of the people who responded had babies who were born in the summer...but I'm looking for people to respond who's babies 1st birthday will be during RSV season!  I would have a big birthday party if it were summer, but not in December....

Re: 1st birthday (if your baby was born in winter)

  • My son is a January baby...and we live in MN - lol.  For his 1st bday we did a small "party" on his actual bday with just immediate family meaning it less than a dozen people including the three people who live in my house.  It wasn't just because of illness potential either - it was because large gatherings freaked him out and it was his party so we did it in a way that he could enjoy himself.

Other kids weren't an issue because DH is an only child and my sister doesn't have kids yet so it was just a handful of adults and DS for lunch followed by cake and presents - start to finish the whole thing was like 3 hours.

  • We had a huge party in the middle of January. There were probably 50 people there and we rented out a hall.

We asked guidance from our pedi. She told us that Katie's lungs were normal and fully mature. There was no need to see her as a preemie anymore. She was caught up in weight and height.

I wouldn't have had a big party if your LO is still having respiratory issues or weight issues. We did wind up getting RSV, but not until about March or April. She never needed a treatment and there was no hospital care required. We were able to treat at home.

Bottom line is that you just need to do what you feel comfortable with. There is no set rule that you have to throw a big party for their 1st birthday. Have fun planning!

  • Olivia was born in January.  For her first birthday we had a very small party on her birthday (us, grandparents and that was it) and then had a big party when she was 1 1/2 - in June.

I would def. ask your pedi to see what he/she says.  If you have it in winter and there will be a lot of people, I would try and find a place that is large so everyone isn't crammed all together.   And make it very clear that people can't come if they are sick at all.

  • DS was born a week before Xmas and we are planning on having a small gathering, if any.  It would probably just be the 3 of us, and the grandparents.
  • Thanks ladies! :)
  • OMG Simon!  how cute are you!
