The Duggars birth control = Quiverfull

That's what they practice in case anyone was wondering... I just googled it and it's a whole "conservative Christian movement" where people believe that all children are a gift from God and the He should decide when you have them...

weird... what's weirder is that Jim Bob only has one sibling

  • I just don't get it at all! Is she ever NOT pregnant? I can't imagine what it must do to her body, IMO can't be good. At least pull out or something to lessen the chances?!? lol

Why is this weird? Is it weird for someone to say their child is a "gift from God"? Is it weird when people stop using BC but don't chart and schedule their conception? Is it weird when people can love and support a large family and decide to grow it?

I by no means come from the same place as the Duggars, but I just don't see what makes it "weird".

  • Actually if you go to their website (not the one linked to TLC) it says that when they were first married she was on the pill. Then they had #1, and she went back on the pill. Apparently she got pregnant while on the pill and miscarried and someone informed them that she miscarried because she was on the pill. They figured it was their fault in some way and you know the rest...
  • I actually met a lady who had a very similar outlook. I had gone to a ladies night at my future MIL's church with her over a year ago, and we were in the elevator with a lady and her newborn. My FMIL said to her "congratulations, how many is this for you?" she smiled and said "number 7!", and FMIL then said "Are you going to have anymore?", she replied with "I will have them as long as god keeps giving them to me." I was kind of shocked as I had never heard anyone say anything like that before.
  • Nobody should have that many children... unless they adopt some poor children that need a family.

So do you think it is "normal" or "average" that they have 19 children?

That sounds like a commercial to have them spayed and neutered.  Perhaps we should all forget having any more children until all the children of the world are adopted. Hmm

You're missing the point or just feel like playing the devils advocate... I'm saying that the entire situation is weird and I don't think I'm crazy for thinking that. If you disagree fine, to each his own.

What's "weird" about it is that "normal" people don't have 19+ children. And I find it weird that someone thinks that God dictates how many children you will have. It's called science, eventually it's going to happen if you aren't preventing it. It's like standing out in the middle of a US highway and seeing if God will dictate whether or not you'll get hit by a car... sorry but eventually you're going to get hit by car, that's not God, that science and statistics...

So disagree if you wish, but I personally find it weird. And I won't even get into the psychological aspect of it...

Of course not, but the OP didn't take issue with the actual number of kids they have, it took issue with their belief system.

wrong. I didn't say anything about having a problem with their belief system, I was informing everyone of what it was called. And I was saying that their entire situation is weird especially given that Jim Bob only has one sibling (So obviously he didn't grow up this way).

And my point is this: Why should you have 1 and they shouldn't have 19? What is your magic number? How many is "ok" and who determines where the line is?

Sorry, you certainly are entitled to your own opinion, and I am playing devil's advocate, but I'm sure there are many women here who would disagree with science and statistics as it relates to conception.

Who cares how many kids she has as long as she's taking care of them?

And forcing a woman to get "fixed" would be a HUGE step in improving women's reproductive rights. Brilliant Idea (sarcasm).

  • Once you read up on the Quiverfull movement , you realize  why they have so many kids.  What we're arguing here is that the Duggars have adopted some non mainstream beliefs we find to be "odd".  Hence, why they have their own show and why we are so interested.  Between all the tri boards , I think I've seen at least 30-40 posts dedicated to this family.

I shudder at the thought of 19 kids.  But hey, that's what they want.  Who are we to say our lifestyles are better because we chose to have only a handful of kids?  I'm more worried about my cousin who neglects her first child yet somehow managed to get knocked up again.

The Duggars are a unique family.  I just choose to change the channel when they come on my TV set.

  • I guess I don't get it.  We have women EVERYWHERE that can't take care of one child YET they keep popping them out on government money ( AKA tax payers money)...and people take issue with this family that has 19 children and take care of all of them and did so way before they ever dreamed of going on TLC.  Who cares if they have 30 kids as long as they take care of them?!?!?!?!?
  • My sister and her husband practice something similar. They had 2 boys only 16 months apart, but have been going unprotected for almost 2 years now and nothing else yet.

There's something to be said for leaving it up to God. Then again I would NOT want to end up like the Duggars, but if I have faith I think God knows that I wouldn't be able to handle that.

They are also trying to populate the world so that they outnumber "undesirables". KWIM? They like their own kind. Quiverfull=CREEPY

Well, everyone b!tches when they try to convert people so maybe they just decided to take matters into their own hands.

  • I referenced to my sister, but didn't even say anything about my parents. I'm one of 9 and to my knowledge my parents never actively prevented pregnancies. I think when I was mostly grown I may have found a pack of condoms, so maybe they started preventing later in life, but when you ask my parents they always say that they never had a set number and feel very blessed to have the family that they have and quite frankly I am too. If DH and I have the resources i hope to have a bigger family some day too. We'll adopt though. We'll adopt whether we have a big family or not, but if we get to 7 or so kids it'll probably be because we have adopted most of them.
  • I agree with this completely, I think God knows exactly what is going to happen and has given us the science and technology to improve so that those less fortunate are able to have children....

I personally don't think your family compares to the Duggars.  There is a big difference between 9 and 19 kids.  9 is a lot but 19 is over double that.

  • heres the thing... the whole "let god decide" thing is a load of crap! thats saying that as humans are decisions are pointless and BS... so i think that im not gonna go to the doctor when im sick, so if i die it was gods choice... not the best example but you get the point. god still gives us resources to help make better decisions- in this case birth control and if not BC then condems- and if not that then hell abstinence is a 100 percent! and its not fair to their children to have 19 kids. i think each child should be cared by their own mother, not the siblings. childhood should be a time of happiness, the duggers are a bunch of idiots
  • i would like to add to my post- i do however feel that if your choice is to have a million kids then you should have to support them. i think its great that the dugger parents can do that...... but i still think its ridiculous
