Hello fellow May Moms!

I recently found out that I am pregnant.  My due date is May 6th.  I am very excited but also extremely nervous as this is not only my first pregnancy but I also have a rare autoimmune disease called Churg Strauss.

As I'm sure you've never heard of it, Churg Strauss is a very rare disease that is a type of vasculitis (a group of diseases that causes inflammation of the blood vessels, arteries, veins or capillaries and affects organs that can lead to disability and sometimes death).

I was diagnosed with Churg Strauss, a type of Vasculitis in 2006 at the age of 27.

It took me 6 years to get a diagnosis after seeing multiple specialists!

Right now the only treatment to put my body into remission is prednisone and an immunosuppressant named Imuran which is a low dose of chemo in a pill form every day.

The doctors that treat my disease basically told me to try to get pregnant and see what happens.  There aren?t many studies that have been done on pregnancy and my disease, so no one knows what will happen to me or the baby (if I?m able to carry it full term).  I know Imuran is a class C drug but my rheumatologist said I must stay on it while I?m pregnant and said people with Lupus have been on Imuran while pregnant and delivered healthy babies.  I will also be under the best care at Brigham and Women?s Hospital but I?m still anxious about all the uncertainty.

Has anyone (or anyone you know) been on Imuran while they were pregnant and had a healthy baby?

Thanks,

Nervous Mama

Re: Autoimmune Disease, Imuran and Pregnancy?

  • Hi there.  I do not have your disease, but I do have Rheumatoid Arthritis another fun autoimmune disease.  What I did pre-pregnancy and once I became pregnant, I saw a maternal fetal medicine specialist in addition to my OB (I am sure they have them at B&W) to follow your care and answer the drug questions.  FWIW, I am on prednisone and have been my entire pregnancy so far and will likely be on it for the remainder.  I did go off Humira, which is biologic DMARD at the suggestion of my rheumatologist, although will likely start up again once I deliver.  The MFM doc said humira was okay, but rheumy doc said no - so I just nixed it. I also did go off tramadol a class C pain killer.

    Good luck!
