i've read some things that say not to introduce it at all until over a year and in tiny amounts (because of the sugar i think), but then other places that say you can give them a little before a year. what is the consensus around here? what are you doing?

She gets a little bit of juice here and there--since we haven't mastered the sippy cup yet she doesn't get much at all, lol. I have put some in a bottle for her but she only takes a few sips and then wants to play with the bottle so.
Usually it's with an afternoon snack or after breakfast.
I should add it's watered down!
I don't see any reason to give it to DD, there's no nutritional value to it, just sugar and DD loves water anyway.
I give juice with every meal to keep her regular. But in general I do nto buy the normal grocery store juice. I buy blueberry, carrot or raspberry/white cranberry or Pom juice so she is getting a serving of fruit or veggies in her drink sans any added sugar, just the natural sugars that occur in the food itself.
I have not read the other responses...but...I do not understand the extreme sides on this issue...it is juice. Worry if it is replacing a meal or your child is obese or has nutritional issues but otherwise...it is just juice!
I gave ds juice in his bottle once for constipation. Other than that he gets a 50/50 juice mixture in his sippy cup every once in a while for "practice". Since he is not so good at the sippy yet he is really only drinking a few tablespoons of the juice mix. The rest of the time he practices with water. I agree with the ok in moderation stance.
If you buy pure fruit or veggie juice it is not "just sugar", don't buy crap and there is nothing to worry about. Look for NO Added Sugar, Full serving of fruit or veggies in each serving etc...

No it is juice without sugar. Or sans sucrose, sugar free can contain fructose though and still count as sugar free, but some times it means the fructose is removed and an alternative sweetner is added, depending on the brand you are looking at.
KMD-yes, she gets badly constipated w/o it. It is cut with water still though. And I do cut Carolines because she drinks so much. I do 1/4 juice and 3/4 water. So 4 sippys full = 1 serving of juice.
I guess I didn't mean sugar-free - the juice we give has the natural sugars from the fruit, but nothing added. So I guess No Sugar Added is the correct label.
It's just pure cranberry or apple juice. Those are the only two we usually give.
My ped said absolutely no juice. It loses most of its nutritional value due to being processed.
My OB/GYN told me to stop drinking juice when I was pregnant since it was basically just sugar.
Maybe I live in an anti-juice area:)
