Very close to pulling the kids out of daycare

And quitting my job, at least temporarily.

It's just been one thing after another with them since we started them back at daycare a couple weeks ago. I know they're going to get sick, but it's just been constant and poor Miles has been coughing so hard the past couple days he's puked up some of his prior feedings. It's a dry cough, but I'm going to take him in if it doesn't start letting up tomorrow.

Was up most of the night with Nora, who had a fever and said her stomach hurt, and who came home last night with her right eye almost swollen shut. No explanation from daycare, only to say she didn't fall or get hit, etc. They think it's a bug bite.

Thank god DH is sick too, because at least the kids can stay home with him today.

Besides the sickness issues, I didn't expect to be so upset about someone else taking care of Miles all day. I miss him a lot and wonder what they do with him all day and if he's getting enough stimulation, physical therapy, etc.

I'm sure I'll get one-starred on this by somebody, but oh well. Life's just been a b*tch around here lately.

  • That must be sooo hard. I hope you can find a solution soon! Have you heard anything about the job you applied for?

  • I don't have any great advice, but it sounds very challenging & I'm sure your reaction is completely normal. Big hugs.

Not sure if this helps, but after the first year of nonstop illnesses (I know, a year is ridiculously long) neither of my boys have been sick with anything other than a standard cold in 18 months.

  • Hugs.

It sounds like you have had a rough few days.  And it does seem so much harder when the kids are sick.  Whatever you decide will be right for you and your family.  Hang in there!

  • ((hugs)) that must be really tough. I hope you come up with a solution that works for your family. hang in there!

It's STILL not posted. I'm going to ask M to inquire about it again when he's back to work. They aren't hiring for it until October or something.?

  • p.s. I gave you a preemptive 5-star rating ;)
  • I have nothing other than *hugs* and I'm sorry.
  • No advice, just (((hugs))). I hope no matter what you find a solution to make everyone happy. I'm sure you will - you've got a pretty good head. :)
  • (((HUGS))) Daycare can be complicated and with MIles able to get sick so easily and Nora catching stuff then exposing it to him too- ugh. That's got to be frustrating. I'm sorry. I would have the same feelings you are.

    *5 stars*

  • hugs hon.  you do what you need to do for your family!
  • So sorry Cooker. School just started around here and all the kids are dropping like flies. I know that doesn't make your situation any easier.

((Hugs)) and vent away all you want and enjoy this cocktailDrinks

  • Do you have an inclusive daycare there?  There is one 50 yards from my house.  They have regular kids with kids with special needs and they have on site therapist and aids for the kids who need them. My aunt founded a similar school in another town.  It is through 5 years.  The kind of specialized care and therapy they can give is better than I could do at home.  If course, the wait list is long, but I think they give priority to special needs kids.  It has a great reputation.

There is also an adult program for people who need special care.

  • I don't really have any super encouraging words, but I hope it works out!
  • That just stinks.  I'm sorry.

  • aw, lamb. I'm sorry you'e feeling that way and having to deal with this. Being a working mom sucks, especialy when you can't stop thinking about your kids and questionable stuff happens. If it makes you feel any better, after a month or two the sicknesses should die down.

Is quitting work feasible? Can you freelance from home? I have all of 2010 open and haven't assigned anything yet. Depending on your coverage and samples, I can see if I can set up a freelance schedule for you. PM me if you're interested, and I'll give you my email address.

Wow, Happ. Thanks so much for the offer. I'll let you know if I'm interested when I figure some more things out here. And thanks, everyone, for the support. Having a rough day.

  • Cooker--it's good sometimes to be the bosslady. And we're looking for freelancers all the time. I'm serious about the offer. Think it over.

  • You have to do what you have to do. Nora and Miles are lucky children to have you as a mom. Good luck.
  • ((HUGS)) sorry it has been a rough start back to daycare.  Have you tried finding someone who can watch the kids in their house?  Or have you considered having someone come to your home?  Lor goes to an in-home daycare and while she still gets sick it is just the basic seasonal cold, which is unavoidable.  I was concerned about Abby, too and was really happy to have the in-home daycare.  The lady is great and was willing to do therapy with Abby.  Our OT and ST had planned on going to her house, but that just never got to happen.  There was going to be some scheduling involved like we were planning the therapy on days she had the least amount of kids.

It is something to try and find.  It may give you more peace of mind that Miles is getting the tehrapy he needs and may make you feel better.

Hang in there and I hope things start to look up!! Smile

Ditto, well said and big ((((((HUGS))))))

  • Good luck in whatever you decide to do.  I know daycare can be a great thing for a lot of kids, but it isn't for some families.  You CAN cut back - as far as you need to - to make it work, especially if it's temporary.  Sell a car; get rid of cable TV, stop eating out, etc etc.  You've heard it all before - whatever you need to do, it's doable and will take adjustment, but the babies are only babies for a few years and then you can go back to work (if that's the path you choose - and either one is right if it's the one that's best for you).
  • Hugs. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I remember when DS first started he got sick the next week with RSV and was out that whole week. Not to mention he got sick at least once or twice a month after that! I hope you can figure out a way to stay home for a little while!!
