Parenting after a Loss

biting

DD has bitten me on my shoulder a few times in the past several days.  It is not aggressive "I'm not getting my way" biting but more like curious biting.  I've even thought it may be related to teething also since she doesn't yet have her bottom lateral incisors.  She doesn't open her mouth wide.  She seems to be nibbling - but it still hurts!

Even though I know she isn't aggressively biting, I still want to nip it in the bud and make sure it doesn't become a bigger problem.  What have you ladies done with your LOs when they bite?

Re: biting

  • Kiran loves to give what we call "zombie kisses" (really open-mouthed kisses on our faces) and every once in awhile he will get our nose and bite it!  We just do the detach and a very serious "No!"  He hasn't done it in a while.

  • DD was biting while breastfeeding for a while. She thought my stern no's were hysterical. When I just popped her off without comment or reaction, she stopped. I don't know if the same technique would work for shoulder biting.
  • Biting is a natural part of baby development.  Maya occasionally bites too -- also not in an aggresive way.  I've been told consistency is key -- whenever she bites, say "No biting" in a firm way.  Eventually this should curb the behavior.
