Truth About Why Duggars Have Large Family

The following is from the Duggar Family website's FAQ page.  When you truly understand why they made the choice to have a large family, they don't seem all that "odd" or "crazy" or whatever other term people label them with.  Their website is www.DuggarFamily.com if you're interested in learning the truth about them.

2.How did you come to the decision to have such a large family? Are you and Jim Bob from large families yourselves? Are each of your families supportive and involved in your lives with your children?

Jim Bob has one older sister that is three years older than him. Michelle is the baby of seven children.

When we first got married we thought we would have maybe two or three children. Michelle started off our marriage taking the Birth control pill so we could plan when we wanted children. After three years, Michelle went off the pill and we had our first son Josh. We loved being Josh?s parents and getting to spend all our time with him, but we didn?t think we were ready for more children yet. So Michelle went back on birth control pills after Josh was born.

Then the unexpected happened, followed by the unthinkable: Michelle got pregnant, even though she was still taking birth control pills. We thought that was impossible, but we were surprised to find out different! Between her second and third month, Michelle miscarried. When the doctor told us the miscarriage probably happened because she had conceived while still on the pill, we were devastated. To us, it meant that something we had chosen to do?use the pill?had caused the end of the pregnancy.

As conservative Christians, we believe every life is sacred, even the life of the unborn. Due to our lack of knowledge, we destroyed the precious life of our unborn child. We prayed and studied the Bible and found a host of references that told us God considered children a gift, a blessing, and a reward. Yet we had considered having another child an inconvenience during that busy time in our lives, and we had taken steps to prevent it from happening.

We weren?t sure if Michelle could have any more children after the miscarriage, but we were sure we were going to stop using the pill. In fact we agreed we would stop using any form of birth control and let God decide how many children we would have. Just a couple of months later, Michelle became pregnant with twins. A double blessing!

At first our families had a lot of concerns for Michelle?s health and how would we be able to take care of and support our family. But over the years they have warmed up to the idea and have been understanding about our heart commitment to love children like God loves children.

  • Why do you even care. There life is none of any of our business. Did you have anyone tell you if it was ok for you to gwet pregnant?? Or if you could have another?? No. It's a free country. If you want baby restrictions go to China, otherwise quit complaining.

  • Is it really possible that being on the pill when she conceived made her miscarry, or was her Dr. just trying to give them a reason? I know LOTS of babies that were conceived while their mothers were on the pill, and they are fine. All thoughts of religion aside, why would ANYONE want to go through morning sickness that many times???

I am glad they are having these kids based on a load of crap a doctor told them.  I mean, I really don't care how many kids they have or the reason they have them, but her being on the pill didn't cause her m/c.

I hope you don't think I'm against the Duggar family.  I truly believe that the family has the right to choose whatever they want.  I posted this due to other people bashing their choice in a previous post.  I do agree with what you said 100%.  Especially about the baby restrictions!  If you want restrictions, get out of our country and go somewhere else!

Then I guess the better question is, why do you care?

That's totally immature...and to think you are bringing a child into this world...scary

  • My comment was directed at others, not bjmyangel =)
  • Many people have this view, many aren't this fertile though :)

Agreed.  They are not odd in their thinking.  If they are able to care for their family, who are we to judge?   Of course, they are on TV and that opens the judgement door, so...

  • You must be confused.  I never said I cared.  I just said that if you put yourself and your family on TV, you make it everyone's business.

Think back to the 80's (when this happened).  Birth control pills were much different back then and they CAN cause you to miscarry.

Isn't it though? So glad I have that choice. You misspelled "believe" earlier. I can't believe YOU'RE bringing a child into this world. ;)

Along with this, we don't know how long she was on the pills while pregnant.  The Pill has been adapted several times over the years because it was too strong.  Hence the mini-pill for those who can't handle the hormones in the Pill.

I don't think the doctor could determine without an autopsy the reason for the miscarriage, but for him to state that the Pill could have been a factor is totally accurate.

  • The reason I posted this to begin with was because there has been such "fighting" going on all morning about whether Mrs. Duggar should have more children or not as well as what her reasons for having so many are to begin with.  When you consider that she and her husband began their marriage much like most of us, only wanting 2 or 3 children, she's not any different from us.  The loss of their child due to their CHOICE caused them to decide to allow God to give them as many children as He saw fit.  Now, who wouldn't freak out and question themselves after being told that they basically killed their baby by their choice???

    BJ, are you Quiverfull?

    BJ, are you Quiverfull?

What does that have to do with the Duggar Family?  To put your inquiring mind at ease, the answer is no.  I have one biological child, 2 step kids, and 1 more baby on the way.  I do homeschool my child.  My best friend is quiverfull and she also homeschools her children.  Does that ease your inquiring mind? :)

Upon reading this, it has actually changed my mind a bit.  But I think I'm the only one.  I'm not religious, so I can't see first hand their point of view, but I understand that one's beliefs are not ruled by logic.  So my opinion of that many kids being illogical is null.  I still hold this opinion, but seeing that beliefs are above opinions of logic, it holds no ground.  MY belief is that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs.  Does that make sense?

On the subject of creating another subject for the Duggars...it's just going to be one of those days isn't it?  If someone comes in claiming to be 1 week pregnant and force ably hurling because their steak was a little pink, I'm shutting my computer down.

He gave us brains and organs to aid the miracle making process. It is beyond naive to believe that a Dr. would point to one factor for miscarriage. To procreate out of guilt of "killing" a baby is a bit unstable. There is therapy and faith in God to help one through the rough times.  Giving birth to 19 or more children won't take the pain of that miscarriage away nor will it absolve them of whatever guilt they may hold for using birth control.

I honestly don't care if they give birth to a football team it's their right but find a better "story" as to the rationale and leave God's will out of it.

I hadn't heard about her originally being on birth control and the miscarriage previously. I had just heard about their 'Quiverfull' belief. And as a Christian, that reasoning, to me, is completely about God's will. They are telling God 'we trust you with our fertility, our family, how many children we have, Michelle's health during and after pregnancy' etc. They're basically putting it all in God's hands. But they're not being irresponsible - financially they're better off than many families with 1 child. Michelle homeschools the kids and they seem like a very tightknit, loving family. This is not like people that don't prepare in life (i.e. finish high school, being financially responsible, etc.) and then say 'well it's God's will that I'm unsuccessful'.

I do not follow the Quiverfull belief system, but I completely respect those that do, because it involves a crazy amount of faith.

As for your earlier comment about the doctor giving that a cause for the miscarriage, medicine changes RAPIDLY. My own OB/GYN just told me a few weeks ago that when he went to medical school his professors said that 90% of what they learned in school will be proved wrong by the time they retire. For example, DHA is still pretty new and almost everyone that mentions PNVs on the bump/the nest boards says that they're on it. This happened in the 80s, so I think it's totally logical that a doctor could have believed that. Plus, the pill has evolved over the years, and since I'm assuming no one on this board took the pill during the 80s, we can't vouch for it's performance, safety, etc.

Long post, but I'm just sick of people bashing the Duggars because they chose a lifestyle different than the norm. Their kids are taken care of, they don't receive any government assistance - why do we care? Now Nadya Suleman, on the other hand...

If it's completley up to God then immaculate conception would be the rage. WE are part of the process. You have unprotected sex and you may get pregnant.  If the Dr. believed that birth control was the ONLY cause of miscarriage wouldn't they  have sued the birth control manufacturer or rallied for changes in the way birth control was distributed or warning labels?  Obv medicine changes and advances, that's not the point.  I find the story all too convenient.

So basically if God's will is at play and was to give a welfare mom 21 children that you helped pay for somehow you would have a right to say something about the subject?  I didn't realize that even God does a credit checks these days.

  • They are not leaving how many children they have up to 'god'.  They are choosing to have sex.  And they are choosing to have sex at fertile times.  They could just as easily choose to stop having vaginal sex, or to only do it at non-fertile times.  This is all their choice, not 'gods'.

And they are totally free to make that choice.

And I'm totally free to think they are irresponsible idiots.

  • Eh, I still think they're flippin' crazy...
