Breastfeeding

vitamins

does your baby take vitamins? i excusively breastfeed, no formula and started solids recently. also i'm still taking over the counter prenatals. my pedi. just recommended my baby take vitamins with fluoride. she's 7 months/17 pounds.

Re: vitamins

  • is your water fluoridated?  If so, I personally do not think fluoride is necessary.  We are exposed to fluoride on a daily basis via tap water, water in canned goods...  Also, fluoride is found to be passed via breastmilk as well.  Other vitamins would probably be ok but not always necessary.  On the other hand, if you live in a non-fluoridated area, it would be a good idea.

  • No.  I'm still taking prenatals and DD has a well balanced diet.  I do anticipate weaning her in the next couple of months, so I'm planning to talk to pedi at her next appt to find out what I should give her.
  • I did the same as you, and my DS didn't take any fortified rice cereals, etc. I had his iron level checked at 9 and 12 months and they were fine. My pedi also recommended vitamins, but we had enough issues getting him to eat solids, that we didn't start. I'll probably start something soon, now that he is over 1, but he is still BF instead of cow's milk.
