Anyone familiar with Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame" movie?

DS's preschool class had "movie and popcorn" day yesterday and watched this movie. I asked DS about it, and he told me the best part was when one of the characters said, "Damn it." He thought this was hilarious. Me, not so much.

The movie is rated G. Is there really profanity in it? I'm going to talk to the preschool director this afternoon, but I'm not familiar with the movie and don't have time to watch it today.

  • Hmm... I don't remember that being in there. I guess you could always google it? :)

    Yeah, I tried googling. Nothing.

  • I don't remember any profanity during the movie, but I do remember when watching it I thought it was pretty scary for a G rated Disney movie.  I saw it quite a few years ago though while babysitting my cousin.

  • I can't imagine that in a Disney G rated movie they would say a curse word but then again I have been known to be wrong, but only a couple of times.  Did he say what happened before or after the part that they said damn it?  I really can't remember them saying it but it's been a couple of years since I've seen it.  I also think that might be too scary for some preschoolers to watch, Isabelle was terrified of Nemo when I first let her watch it & The Little Mermaid is scary too for that age.

The thing is DS is 4. He's not the most reliable source of information. Having said that, he's never said "damn it" before and he specifically said he heard it on the movie and that it was a "funny" word. I can't imagine him making that up.

  • I wonder if maybe the teacher said it while they were watching the movie & he thought it just came from the movie?  Unfortunately that is one of the Disney movies that I don't have at home so I can't watch it & find out.  I did just check out online & according to https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116583/parentalguide they do say hell & damn but it refers to religious terms so I guess they really do say it & your son was right. I think I'd be calling the preschool!  After reading that website I would not be letting my child watch this movie.

  • I haven't seen that movie in 10 years and I don't remember them saying Damn.  However I do remember thinking it wasn't appropriate for children.  There was one creepy scene where the villian was singing about how much he desired Esmerelda the heroine.  She was dancing very seductively and I remember giving the movie the side eye.

Also I was substituting at my church's day care a few weeks ago.  We watched the movie Ratatouille thinking it was safe since it was rated G and someone in the movie said "Welcome to Hell."  Suddenly all kids were repeating that.  I hope none of them went home saying that.

That site made me laugh at little: " Esmeralda's goat is occasionally seen with a pipe in his mouth as he and Esmeralda move about the town in disguise as an old man" - **GASP**!!! Surprise

  • Apparently there's a sequal to "Hunchback" out too, so they may have watched that one.
  • I have it on VHS from the Disney store and don't remember them saying that! DD just watched it last week!
  • I do know Lightning McQueen says he is stuck in Hillbilly Hell, which is apparently ok by Disney standards, so I wouldnt doubt Hunchback says Damn...esp if it is a pun related to religion.  I would go with DS on this one...
  • Definitely not the best movie for 4 year-olds to be watching! There are alot of sexual innuendos and adult themes throughout. It's rated G but really not appropriate for young children, imo.
