1st birthday?

Just a random question I was thinking about.  Did you guys celebrate your baby's first birthday? or first adjusted birthday?

Our DS will be 1 yr on December 30th....but he's 1 yr adjusted April 6th 2010.  he's NICu homecoming is Apr 24th.

We didn't have a baptism party for him (germs), but would be nice to have a party eventually.  My aunts and uncles still haven't met him. Oops.

We don't want a big 1 yr old birthday in december due to germs :( maybe just a small get-together with our immediate families  I feel like we've missed out on so much!

Did/would you have a 1 yr old party on his adjusted birthday, or on his NICU homecoming day, or just skip the idea all together?

Re: 1st birthday?

  • We had a small family thing for her actual Birthday because of RSV season (November).  Her Due Date was in February (also RSV season) so we didn't want to have her "real" party then either.  So what we did was have a "Coming Out Party" for her 1/2 Birthday which roughly coincided with the end of her RSV quarantine.  We could comfortably have more people over and we had a lot to celebrate.  For her 2nd Birthday she won't be under "RSV quarantine" anymore - she has already been through 2 seasons, but I'm sure we'll just take precautions (hand washing, anti-bacterial pumps placed around the house, no sick people, etc.).

  • We had a big party on his actual birthday. I "celebrated" his homecoming day by staying home from work and hanging out with him all day. I actually forgot it was his adjusted birthday until the end of the day...it didn't really seem like a big deal to me anymore.
  • We lucked out b/c Keira's first birthday is April 29th and it coincided with the end of RSV season. ?I was kind of having a rough time emotionally at that time though. ?All of the 'one year anniversaries' just made me feel overwhelmed. ?We did a quiet immediate family only small party on her birthday. ?After the date passed though I felt such a relief, like a weight was lifted from my shoulders and I suddenly COULDN'T WAIT to celebrate my Keira's birth. ?Cue the quick party plans and about 3 weeks after her actual birthday, we threw her a pretty huge backyard picnic/party with ALL of our friends and family. ?I am so so glad I did it. ?The planning was therapeutic and the party was so much fun!!!

  • We had her birthday party for her actual birthday. It's the only day everyone else really recognizes anyway. I celebrated her homecoming day and adjusted birthday with just her and my husband...

    This.

For his adjusted birthday, it's on the same "list" as our dating anniversary... we mention it, I might make a blog post about it with a little reflection, but that's about it.

We're also lucky that timing wise, we were OK for his birthday party in April, so RSV wasn't as much of a concern!

  • I have 80 people and a hall rented for Devan's 1st birthday.  if you are worried about germs, you may feel more comfortable keeping it small and just having a small party with immediate family members.  When she was first born, I was so worried about getting sick and all, but now she is starting daycare and the germs will be plentiful.  We do the best we can to keep her healthy, but I am not going to keep her in isolation since she is old enough to fight some germs off and get immuned to them.
  • We just celebrated Aubrey's 1 year actual b-day a couple of weeks ago (see siggy pics).  It's an important day, and will always be her TRUE birthday, so it was worthy of a party.  We stuck to inviting immediate family though.  I'm sure we'll do something small for her adjusted b-day and her homecoming day, but that will be in November so the guest list will depend on if anyone is sick or not.  I say celebrate all the firsts as much as you can!  It's been a big year and you've come a long way!
  • We weren't going to celebrate on his bday bc I thought I'd be too emotional but as the day got closer I changed my mind and we had a party.  We aren't huge party people though so we just had our families over (both of our parents and most of our siblings).  On his coming home day we had a nice dinner as a family and I think we will always celebrate that day the 3 of us.  We do not adjust his age since he is a 36 weeker so we did not do anything on my due date (his coming home day is the day after that day anyway).

As far as your situation with RSV season I doubt I wouldl do a big party bc of germs so I think his coming home day or adjusted bday would work great for your situation this year.  You could still do something small on his actual bday with either just the 3 of you or maybe include the grandparents.
