Newbie - Where to start??!!

Hello everyone -

DH and I have decided that we are ready to start TTC!!! I am VERY excited, however, where do you begin?

I have to admit that I have never really tracked my periods so I am not really sure of when I ovulate and stuff.

We are meeting with Mary the Midwife for our pre-pregnancy screening next Friday.....but other then that...I don't know what else we need to do before "doing it" lol

 Any suggestions?

  • Welcome! Charting was way too much work for me. I was always forgetting to take my temp right when I woke up, and I got sick with a fever too so that screwed me up. I used the ovulation predictor kit and got pg the first cycle of trying. Try not to make it a job and make it fun. Unfortunately once I want something I want it now so I kind of turned it into a job, lol. Make sure you are taking your prenatals and make sure they have folic acid! I took an extra folic acid for the first month or 2. I also took fish oil.

    Good luck!!!!

  • Hello. I just found I'm pregnant and wandered over here to see if anything was happening. I've been charting since February and it wasn't hard. I bought the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility to help me out, and once I got the hang of it it was second nature. Otherwise, get some ovulation predictor pee sticks, and do it like rabbits. Ditto the recommendation to take prenatals now. If nothing more, they make your hair and nails nice.
  • I didn't chart because it seemed too complicated. However, my Dr recommended having sex every other day (apparently every day can deplete your DH's sperm) I also assumed that 2 weeks after AF began was when I was ovulating so then we switched it to every 12 hours. We did this exclusively for 1 month and it worked. Good luck!!!

  • When I first went to my doctor to talk about TTC, he recommended that you "do it" around day 12 of your cycle, but not everyday... meaning that day one is when you start your period.  From there, count the days and you should TTC on days 10, 12, and 14, or so.  That way his sperm count isn't as low as if you would have sex everyday.  Most women ovulate around day 12 of their cycle. Hope this helps!
  • Thanks!

I started taking my prenatals last week!  I have not been charting, but will try the OPK, thank you for the suggestion.
