RP: Any advice about my picky eater?

DS1 has always been an excellent eater, so this is super new to me, and really frustrating. Jonas will be one in a week. The only things I can get him to eat on a regular basis are yogurt, cheerios, and fruit. Everything else he either won't touch (just shakes his head no furiously) or he'll eat once and never touch again.

I wouldn't be super concerned if he wasn't so small. His weight is barely on the charts, and if you look at weight to height ratio he is not on the chart at all. We are in the process of trying to drop bottles and have gotten down to two a day. He will drink very diluted juice and about one small cup of milk a day. But he just doesn't want to eat.

I am this close to just giving up and giving him a third bottle a day again because I'm scared that he is just not getting enough. I would really like to have the bottles gone soon, but if the kid won't eat, I don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions or commiseration?

  • He's one. I wouldn't worry about him being picky. I'd give him another bottle.

  • If he likes yogurt that is good since he is getting "milk" that way.  Have you tried mashed avacado?  It is similar in texture to yogurt and it really is mild. It is also a healthy fat.  My DS was on the small size...at one time 50% height and 5% weight.  I just really pushed the avacados and used real butter on veggies (like squash, sweet potatoes, mashed brocolli...just cook it a long time).  I probably wouldn't add another bottle...especially if he will eat yogurt.  I also gave V8 Fusion with the fruit/veggie mixed with some water (not even half and half) because he needed the calories.  If he is hungry he will eat.
  • Looks like someone peed in Elise's cheerio's this morning........

DS is 3 and will eat anything now but he wasn't always like that.  I would just give him what I knew he would eat along with his milk.  Pedi said that was fine because he will not starve himself.  I never had to worry about him being small though, he has always been at least in the 50th %.

What about adding some pedisure into his diet or toddler formula.  If he is drinking from a cup once a day then you could put one of these in the cup and continue with the two bottles a day.  That would give him some extra nutrients.  Also I would take things he liked and add them to what he wouldn't eat, like he loves spaghetti sauce so I would cover his vegtables in it, and he loves wraps so I would put all sorts of stuff in a wrap and call it a taco and he would eat it all.

  • If he is only 1, I wouldn't worry about it yet. DS barely ate anything at a year and was still pretty much EBF. He is now almost 2 and eats like a champ. I would definitely give him more milk or formula if he does not seem to be eating much. Oh, and DS was never on the charts until 18 months when he hit the 3rd percentile. I just think at 1 he was not ready to be eating many solids yet.
