You can do the heimlich on pregnant women. You just do it higher up. At leas that is what they taught us in CPR. . .
Really? In all the CPR classes I've taken (4 total, and all by different instructors/places) they have never covered pregnancy.
They should have taught it, especially if it's a red cross class. I'm certified to teach red cross CPR and yes, you just do it higher up.

Just a side note. My Dad got a popcorn kernel stuck in his windpipe once. It was too light to come up with my stepmom doing the heimlich maneuver. He started turning blue and couldn't breathe, so as a last resort, he stuck his finger down his throat to make himself throw up.
It ended up working and unclogged the passage. Remember that if you're ever choking!
I've had swallowing/throat problems ever since a neck surgery about 10 years ago, and what you have to do is force yourself cough ... as hard as it is because something is stuck down there ... but that's all you can do if you can't bend over and let gravity pull it a little loose. Just remember, as long as you are coughing, no matter how awful, you're still breathing.
I just took a CPR class last week.....and you are supposed to do the compressions on the chest while bending the lady over at her waist.
I didn't read all of the responses.....but by choosing to do nothing...u run the risk of dying as well as the baby....but if you DO the heimlich, you can dislodge whatever you are choking on, only risking hurting your baby.
TRUST ME i wouldn't wish this upon anyone....BUT you have to do something, right??
Re: What would you do if you choked??
Hmmm... horrifying thought. I guess they could TRY to do the Heimlich right below the breasts. Better than nothing.
ETA: Ya know, it's strange to think that in all the CPR classes, no one has ever covered how to save a pregnant lady.
