With my first they tried...but they couldn't tell. Turned out it was a girl. I think some will take a guess...but most will give you the disclaimer that it's usually too early to tell because at that point the parts resemble both sexes.

Yes, we had DS's very late (closer to 13.5 weeks) and they told us boy. It's about the 'angle of the dangle' and not the fact that there is a dangle at all as both with have external genitals at that age.
With a very good u/s and a very trained technician it is possible, but still very early. I go to a high risk OB and they are very very trained, so they have a good 'guess rate'.
We had our NT Scan yesterday, and the doctor asked us if we had a feeling either way about if the baby was a boy or a girl and if were eventually planning on finding out. We said that we thought if was a girl, and that yes we were planning to find out - and his response was, "Well in that case, I can tell you I'm 90% certain that the baby is a girl!" I definitely did not think we'd find out that early, but I guess the baby was in a good position to tell. The doctor must have been pretty certain to offer up that information without us even asking. We have another ultrasound scheduled for September 24 - hopefully we'll get a confirmation then!
