2nd Trimester

Ladies who will be returning to work and sending LO to a daycare/nanny..etc...

I am currently "looking" for daycares, in home cares and nannies...

How many of you have put your names on lists already for a day care? If so, how far along were you once you made the decision?

I feel very far behind and dont see us even VISITING any daycares until i am close to 26 weeks or so. Is this to late??

STRESS..............

  • I'm already in at an at-home daycare -- contacted her 2 weeks ago (12w), and she'll accept a newborn next August!

  • I haven't even looked into anything yet.
  • I have called around to a few places to get prices, hours, etc.  I am on the waiting list for one place.  They don't anticipate having an opening until Aug 2010!!  This freaked me out a little bit.  Some in-home daycare is harder to get in to because they are limited on how many infants they can have.  The place that I'm on the waiting list for is not an in-home, they are just very popular and have a really good reputation in town.  I would recommend at least calling around to a few places soon.  Good luck on your search!

HOLY COW!! You make me feel terrible!! I barely knew i was pregnant at 12 weeks...i think i was still crying from the shock and hadn't even told our family yet!! HAHAHA!

  • My school district has a daycare for employees, and I'm already on the list.  The spots for infants fill fast and there is already a waiting list for infants beginning daycare August 2010.

It really depends on how much you want LO in a particular daycare as to how early you need to look or get on a list.

  • I didn't start looking for day care until DS was 4months old.  I don't think that you are too late.  I would have liked to start earlier but a lot of people that I talked to wondered why I was doing it so early.....like duh....I need day care and I felt much better once I found one and got a spot.  Don't stress.

  • I think it depends on where you live.  There are a ton of daycares in my neighborhood.  Our neighbor across the street got her infant into a very good daycare with no problem, so I feel ok about it for now.  I'm 17 weeks and we'll probably start looking around in the next month.
  • We're having a major issue with this because I want to put my child at an actual daycare at someones house that has a liscence for childcare. My husband thinks that because his "best friends" owns a daycare center and he offered it to us for free that we should take the baby there. This place is run by a bunch a people that i do not know and it's really out of my way. About 20 minutes out of my way. So, I guess we have a lot oo work on still

  • One of the daycare centers I really like had me on their waiting list from October 2008 until June 2009 and I dont live in a big city like NY etc...

It was crazy. When they finally called DS (DS was 4 months old) was already in a wonderful daycare way better in fact and I just laughed at her on the phone and gave them my mind (in a nice way). They said they would have a spot ready by Feb (which was before DS was suppose to be here).

  • I'm already on a couple of lists.  For some of the daycares, it was just in time, for others, I was early...

  • I have not done anything toward finding a day care.  I will start in a couple of weeks most likely.  I figure worst comes to worst I could always find a nanny for the first several months to a year.  We'll see.  :)
  • It really depends on a lot of factors, including a) where you live, b) how long your leave is, and c) how dead-set you are on a particular daycare.

We've moved twice since DD was born, so both times, we've had to find child care for her on VERY short notice (less than two months), and we've never had a problem.

I already know most of the daycares in my area from having looked at daycares for DD, I know what my top choices are, and I know that they don't usually run waitlists. Plus, we'll have at least six months of leave between DH and me, probably more. So I'm not in a rush... we haven't even started talking to daycares yet.

  • I started visiting daycares when I was 14 weeks.  I'm glad I did!!  The place we liked only had 1 opening for the time we would need to start.  So we paid the deposit and got our spot held.

  • We made our decision at 20 weeks and the daycare we want the LO in has a waiting list until May 2010.  FINGERS CROSSED
  • We started exploring daycare options a few months ago. Ultimately, we decided that since both DH and I are able to flex our schedules after my maternity leave that we would work opposite shifts so that one of us could be home with DD at all times of the day. DH is going to watch her during the day and work 2nd shift while I take over in the evenings and continue to work 1st shift (although with shortened hours). DH will get a 6% increase in his pay if he switches to second shift, so it works out on all ends. My MIL, who lives only 5 minutes away from us, is planning to retire in 2011 so we'll only have to work seperate shifts for a little over a year or so before she will become our full-time babysitter.
