DO you ever give your LO a bite of a piece of cake or any treat you are eating? My aunt gave my DS a few bites of chocolate cake today, and he liked it. I just do not want to make any bad habits at this point.
If you have a 9 month old are they eating with their own fingers? My LO does not pick up food yet unless it is in his fist.
Re: 9 month old eating
We haven't given DS sweet treats yet so I'm not help.
He LOVES feeding himself. Even when I feed him with a spoon, he takes it away and does it himself. It makes dinner time so much messier.
The only dessert-type food I've tried with DS so far was organic vanilla frozen yogurt. He had one itty bitty spoonful and he acted as though I fed him a spoonful of lemon juice. I tasted it and it was pretty good, so I think he just didn't like the coldness of it.
I do know that I will attempt to give him a few bites of cake a week or two before his 1st birthday. I'll do this so that I know two things: a). whether or not he even likes cake (this will allow me to prepare for when he attempts to eat in front of 30+ guests) and b). if he does like it, what flavor he prefers.
Yep - we give him tastes of cake and icecream, etc.
And yep - he has been feeding himself for at least 4-5 weeks. In the beginning he would grab a puff in his entire fist and then put his whole fist (or try to) in his mouth...he didn't get how to release his fist to let the puff fall out. He would actually suck on his fist...it was pretty funny. Then, a few days later he started using the grippers (thumb and pointer) and getting a few in there...and he just got better from there.
I would just let LO try. Feed him some puffs and leave some in front of him. He'll get it : )
Now he's on to "cheese sandwiches" little pieces of a cheese slice pushed onto a little piece of bread, pasta, mum mum broken up, veggies and fruit chunks, etc. So much easier now!!! Although...he still has purees and yogurt.
I usually give ds a little of what I'm having. He wants nothing to do with purees now that he can feed himself finger foods. As far as sweets go he's had some coffee cake and some snickerdoodle. I'm careful with what I give him though b/c he is allergic to milk.
I don't worry about creating any bad habits yet.
DD has had bites of ice cream. She feeds herself foods put on her tray. I just wish she would eat more. I still feed her purees 3 meals a day. She isn't gaining enough weight. Never been a big eater and always been pretty small for her age.
