  • Yes, and you should. Pregnancy can cause pregnancy-gingivitis, which is normal, but good dental hygiene can help with that. Just avoid any x-rays.
  • Yes but your gums are more sensitive when pregnant so you may bleed and it may be a little more uncomfortable.  No X-rays or work though.
  • I think so, my doctor asked me when the last time I got my teeth cleaned, and I just had it done, so I'm due again in Dec. She didn't say anything about it.
  • thanks so much everyone!! Greatly appreciated!
  • I had an appointment for a cleaning 2 weeks ago and before she started I informed her that I'm pregnant and the dentist asked if I spoke to my OB about this appointment and I told her no, so the dentist had to call my OB and get his permission.

The dentist told me that with pregnancy we have more blood flow in our bodies and when cleaning our teeth bacteria is moved all around the moth and could cause problems. ?My doc did give her the OK to go ahead with the cleaning though?

  • I had to have a letter from my OB before my dentist would see me, even though I only needed my teeth cleaned.  The letter from my OB was a form letter that he just wrote my name and due date in the blanks.  It had a list of medications that I could and couldn't use if any dental work had to be done.  It also said that I could have x-rays as long as my abdomen was covered, but I didn't get them done.

Weird as it sounds, my OB said that I should go to the dentist because there is a link between gingivitis and pre-term labor.

  • I actually called around to different dentists today to see how much it would cost for a cleaning since I don't have dental insurance. This was a good question with excellent info given. I second the thanks!
  • My first OB actually told me that not only should I visit the dentist, but that I should have my cavity filled also.

  • yes and it's recommended that you do, a few times!

but save any big work for after pregnancy unless you ABSOLUTELY need it.

    And no x-rays.

  • Yes, I did. My gums were extra-sensitive, though.
