S/O on texting and driving

Just for discussion to see different view points.  This is a discussion DH and I have been having lately.  Do you see a difference in talking on the phone and driving, especially if you have a hands-free device, and talking to someone (or several someones) in the car with you.

Re: S/O on texting and driving

  • If you are strictly hands free - no, I do not think it is different.  But this means no dialing, no texting, no holding a handset.  I do think that the onus is on drivers to ensure that they are undistracted while talking; whether with a person in the car or on the phone.

  • In the car, I only do speakerphone.  My Blackberry is usually charging, so I rest the phone on my lap, since it's plugged into my center console, and boings back if I hold it!

  • if hands free- no difference. someone in the car poses for the same type of distraction that a phone call would.

  • I would say that if you're totally hands free.... bluetooth... no dialing, no holding... you're probably safer.... IF you pay attention to the road. I try to limit my convos to the most basic of calls, even if it's work. For instance, my old boss would actually sit on confernce calls while driving, which I could never do.

  • No, only if we assume that the driver has the hands-free device already in place and can connect the call with minimal ado.

  • I'm not much of a phone call person anyway, but when I talk on the phone it's not hands free.  I'm a one handed driver anyway, and I've never had a problem dividing attention.  The only time I put the phone down or have it on speaker is so I can park or if it starts raining.  But I don't see a difference between having people in the car and talking on the phone, in fact I think other passengers are more distracting than a phone call.
  • If you're completely hands-free, then I don't think there is any difference. My car has bluetooth capabilities - so when my phone rings I can answer using a button on my steering wheel and I hear the person through my car speakers. If I'm driving my fiance's truck I try not to use my phone at all.

I was wondering if anyone else felt this way.  This is what DH and I both said.  I am a one-handed driver as well, phone or no phone.  I do use my blue tooth most of the time now because DH got it for me and it wasn't cheap and I do like it, but even with it, I am a one-handed driver as well.

I want a car like that.  Maybe my next one.

  • My DH is often driving while working, but I tell him all the time to never text and drive. He has a bluetooth for his Blackberry, so that is ok. Whatever is legally allowed I guess I can't have a problem with it - he has to work and drive a lot.

  • I think it is only safe if you are COMPLETELY hands free and texting is definitely dangerous!  In the UK it is illegal to drive while talking on a cell phone unless you have a hands free kit.

Scientific studies have also shown that it can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.

I know people say that they concentrate fully while on their phone but can you say with 100% honesty that you are as focused on driving as you when not on the phone?  Remember you don't just have your own driving skills to worry about, there are also the 1000s of other drivers who might hit you!

  • I know you were talking more about talking on phone not texting, but I was in a bad accident last november (I flipped my car) because of changing ipod songs while driving so Im EXTREMELY anti texting or really doing anything else while driving.
  • Talking with little or no hand interaction seems to require the same attention and effort as having a car full of people so in my opinion its no different.  I think driving and texting is just plain stupid and I think its rediculous that laws need to be passed for people to think that its not a good idea!
