advice--possible mastitis?(maybe tmi)

Today I have had the chills all day.  Right now my temp is 101.9.  My breasts/nipples are tender.  I have been struggling for the past few days with cracked and at times the one nipple had bled.  I have never experienced mastitis before.  If my temp does not go down in a little bit here I will be calling the doc.  So, in the meantime, I was just wondering if you ladies thought this could be the development of mastitis?Crying

  • Sounds like it could be.  Call the doc ASAP - you don't want to let it go untreated too long.

  • I had the beginning of mastitis, caught it in time, thank god. SUPER painful...like, one of the worst pains I've had. Once it develops, you'll get red. I had a temp, but that was the least of my problems.
  • Three days after my DD was born, I woke up shaking all over with a temp. of 104.5. My doc said it was the worst case of mastitis he had seen in ten years. The fact that I am petite but very large chested did not help ( 32 DDD). I could not BF at all. I stayed wrapped up in ace bandages (as tight as you can get them) for about 5 days. I also took antibiotics and motrin. Every two hours I took hot hot showers to empty my breast of the infection. Take mastitis very seriously. I was extremely sick for about a week.

  • Call your OB right now. I had mastitis when DS was 7 weeks old. It went from "hmm, my boob feels a little tender" to high fever/chills/boob bright red & really painful in just a few hours.

Usually OBs will ask you about your symptoms & call in an Rx. Is there a pharmacy open in the evenings near you? I'd try to get them to call it into a pharmacy open in the evening so you can get it resolved. Once I got on the antibiotics I felt better the next day.

Oh, & keep nursing - it's okay for LO to nurse & it will help rid you of the infection. Nurse often & pump some too if you can.

ETA - You may also want to talk to an LC about your LOs latch if your nipples are cracking & bleeding. Use nipple cream every feed too. Nipple issues can cause mastitis.

  • When I had Mastitis the first thing I really noticed (besides nipple tenderness) is achy joints...it felt exactly like the flu just w/out any congestion.
