Teachers- swine flu

If you are a teacher, are you getting the H1N1 vaccine?  I'm a substitute and i really can't decide.  DH doesn't want me to work if i don't get it but says its up to me.

Re: Teachers- swine flu

  • I've never had any flu vaccine and I've never had the flu. I'm not sure if I will get the vaccine this year. I plan on asking my OB and if she thinks I should get the vaccine I am going to.

  • Talked to my OB and she said to get the regular one for sure and to get the h1n1 if possible.  I am nervous about it.  She told me that they are scheduled to come out late October, early November but it could be later.  If its later, it's super close to my due date and I am not sure if I will get it.  I just worry because no one knows what effect it will have on the baby.  I'll probably get it...which is what all my rambling explains I guess.
  • I'm not comfortable enough with all the unknowns. DH and I talked about it yesterday and I don't think I am going to get it. I don't like the unknown effects on the fetus. It won't be known until after our kids are born. Luckily this yr I am only working as a one on one with a student (I actually have 4 students) but I have talked with my school and if flu season is out of control, I am probably going to quit early. I know not everyone has that option, but that is what we ended up deciding.

I feel the exact same way.  I won't get it because it is too new and the effects on a fetus are not known.  I'm a substitute teacher so if flu season gets bad, i will just no longer work.  My husband doesn't want me to work at all because hes nervous about it.  I'm not sure what i'm going to do.

  • I know it's scary because it is new, but the vast vast vast majority of people who have had it have been just fine. I wouldn't not work just to avoid the potential of getting it.  The mortality rate is less than 1%.  Yes, statistically pregnant women tend to get sicker, but that is true for seasonal flu too, and no one stays home from their job throughout flu season.  As for the vaccine, I fall in the "too new, not for me" camp.

This is me as well. I'm teaching on supply (substitute) also and depending how bad it flares up again here in the UK, I may cut work back. I just don't trust it.

I've never gotten the regular flu jab either, so that makes me question if I need to.

  • I've been going back and forth about it as well. I opted not to teach this year, so I wouldnt be surrounded by kindergarteners couphing and whiping snotty noses on me! My mother in law is family practice and she says get it, but my pediatrician  growing up (still good friends of parents) says he is not suggesting it due to the unknown on the fetus! I'll ask my ob her thoughts on thursday. I have gotten the flu about a week after getting the regular flu shot, doc said I just had a bad reaction to the shot, so I'm leaning towards not taking my chances with either. If I was teaching, I may think differently.

That is a very good point.  I'm not really worried about death of myself, i'm worried about something being wrong with the baby.  I'm going to research pregnancy and swine flu more.  Thank you.

  • I am a full time 1st grade teacher and I will NOT be getting the vaccine.  I refuse to be anyone's guinea pig while pregnant.  I will not be leaving my job either...just taking the typical precautions.
