Cleaning Help Question

I'm going back to work the end of September after 4 months off. Prior to having my daughter DH and I considered hiring a cleaning lady and even interviewed a few. I found someone I liked in May but then was unexpectedly hospitalized and had an emergency C-section. I never committed to the cleaning lady and ended up dropping it. Of course now that I am thinking about going back to work and getting everything in order, I have decided this is something that would be a huge help. The woman that we interviewed quoted us $70 per week if we supply the cleaning supplies, $75 if she provides all supplies. What do you think, reasonable? I know that I would LOVE having help and that it will allow me to spend precious hours with my daughter rather than worrying about the house when I get home from work. I guess I just need a little push to make the committment...

Re: Cleaning Help Question

  • I think its fairly reasonable. Ours is almost that but its for a service of 4 people who come. If you are worried about price, consider having her come every other week. Thats what we just started, and we really only have to do minimal upkeep in between.

Make sure they are licensed an such.

  • This depends on where you live, and how big your house is.

We pay $178 for a biweekly cleaning of our 2400 sq ft home. We pay more to go through a company vs. a person but that's a choice we've made for a few reasons. A single person here charges about $20/hour, a company charges approx. $30/hour. We live in a HCOL city.

  • I think it's worth it.  I don't know where I would ever find the time to clean if I didn't have my lady.  I pay $70 bi weekly and she does everything and change my sheets.  It's glorious!
  • We just hired a cleaning lady earlier this month as my parents gave me 10 hours for my birthday.  It has been a god send and I will never go back.  We have her come every other week and as pp said it is minimal upkeep inbetween.  We only pay $12/hour plus tip.  It has been such a stress reliever.
  • Ditto pp who says cost will range based on size of house and your geographic location.  In general, $70 sounds reasonable to me but I have always lived in a HCOL area.  Also ditto pp that it will be the best $70 you spend each week (or every other week which is all I find necessary).
  • I guess I left out some pertinent info -- -my house is 2 stories, 2400 sq. ft. We live in the suburbs of what I wouldn't consider a HCOL area but lots of young professionals and families that are willing to fork over the cash for extras such as house cleaners.

I would love to just have her come every other week but she is pushing every week really hard. We'll see. I need to call her back tomorrow when the baby naps and get things finalized.

    Thanks for the input!

  • I pay $75 every other week in a city similar to yours with a house of similar size.
  • must be nice i do all the cleaning
