If money were no object...(stroller ?)

My co-worker is having a baby and practically everything from her registry is purchased.  The office got together and collected money and raised almost $2,000 for her.  She has indicated that the one thing she doesn't have is a stroller and it's the one thing that she has said she isn't particular about.  We have decided to purchase her a stroller and give the rest to her for savings for the newborn (not sure how yet).  I've been looking and I'm completely overwhelmed!  Travel system or no travel system?  Bugaboo, quinny, orbit, oh my!  If you could have any stroller or travel set on the market and money were no object (as long as it's under 2k), what would you pick and why?  If it matters, she commutes to work and she lives in Las Vegas.

I know some people are particular about strollers, but she doesn't seem to be.  Even if she doesn't like the one we purchase, we intend to buy it at a store where she can take it back without issue.  This weekend I went all over--Babies R Us, Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms, Walmart, etc. and I can't seem to decide what would work.

Sorry if this has been asked or gets asked a lot.  I'm still trying to get pregnant so I only lurk/post on the GP board.

  • I'd vote AGAINST the orbit- since we finally got the store clerk to admit it's basically a really expensive travel system that you can't use when the child gets bigger... it's really only for babies. It's really cool for what it is ,but way to pricey to not last longer than that.

  • I love our Quinny!  If she doesn't have a carseat yet you can also buy her the Maxi-Cosi to go with it.

We were looking at the Orbit with the toddler set as well.  So the infant and toddler set.  Would that be better, or do you still think it's not worth the $$?

That's what I said, until I looked at the reviews!  Then, I can't decide which bugaboo...Frog, Chameleon, bee?  Seriously, I'm glad I don't have to make this decision yet for myself.  It would take me weeks to learn the differences!

I'm surprised we raised that much, too!  I just hope that when I finally get pregnant everyone is just as generous.  ;)

  • I love our Chicco. I'd ask her if she has a carseat?that?way if she does you can make sure it's compatible with whatever stroller you go with or then you guys could get her a travel system.?
  • I love our Baby Jogger.  But if I didn't feel bad about spending some serious money on a stroller I would have gotten the Uppa Baby Vista.
  • I'd get a Bumbleride. I'm lusting after the Indie Twin since this is #2, but if it was my first, I'd get the Indie.

  • Quinny or Bugaboo cameleon
  • My vote is for a Peg Perego anything.... YOu can do a travel system, or just  a regular full sized one.  Also, you can get her a afull sized stroller as well as a McClaren umbrella stroller.  All together that should run around $500.

  • Will she enjoy jogging after baby comes (Bob jogging stroller), is she tall (get one w/ an adjustable handle).

I'm getting the Uppa Baby Vista ($670) + cupholder ($25) + carseat adapter ($40?).  You need to know what carseat she's getting as there are 3 different adapters to buy. (Graco, Chicco, Peg).

     You can't go wrong w/ a Buggaboo--I say Chameleon.

  • If I could have any stroller I would get the Uppababy Vista!  Its awesome but about $700.  The other thing you might want to ask her about is cord blood banking!  It is pretty expensive and I would flip if I was given enough money to pay for that!

  • I lust after the Stokke.  It's 1200 for the complete set.  Coolest stroller on the market, I think.
  • I say Chameleon (Bugaboo) or UppaBaby Vista

This is a great idea but I would be careful with it. Perhaps give her the money in the form of a Visa gift card and the info about cord blood banking.  Then let her and her family decide.

The only reason I say that is that there is a yearly fee that goes along with it.  I hate it when people get you a present that is nice and thought out but that you then have to continue to pay for for years.

  • Thanks everyone!  She is not an outdoors person but she may do some walking.  She doesn't have a carseat yet.  It's weird, she registered for a ton of stuff, but said she didn't register for the stroller or car seat because she couldn't decide what to get and was going to make a last minute decision.

I should have said this in the beginning, but we intend to buy her either a travel set or a car seat AND stroller.

Thanks for the recs.  Keep 'em coming!

  • You still definitely have enough for a carseat and stroller, even a high end stroller.  I know the Bugaboo's have a separate adapter for the Graco car seats but I don't *think* they're compatible with other seats.  If I didn't have such a tiny trunk I probably would have gotten the Bugaboo Cameleon.  The Uppa Baby Vista is very nice but I actually felt too short for it (I'm 5'1).  I also lust after the Rockstar Baby I'coo Targo because it's just badass looking :)  But again, too big for my car.

(FWIW, I got the Bugaboo Bee)

My mom got us the Uppa Baby Vista, and I ADORE it. I'm only 5'2", and it works out great for me.

  • We're getting the UppaBaby Vista, and I'm so excited. However, we live in the city, and will use it all the time. If someone was going to be taking it in and out of the car all the time, I'm not sure I'd recommend any of the high-end versions (Bugaboo, UppaBaby, etc.)

Another alternative is to get a "big" stroller, the car seat, and also a lightweight stroller, like a Maclaren.

I think a stroller is a bit of a personal thing, and really depends on lifestyle... so perhaps giving cash (or a Visa gift card) is the best option.

  • We were deciding between the Chameleon and the Uppa Baby Vista and I think the features on the Uppa Baby and the fact that you can use a Chicco carseat with it make it a better choice.  The only real advantage I saw to the Chameleon was that it comes in cooler materials.

  • I'm surprised there are no votes for the Orbit.  Before I asked here that's the one I was planning to get (infant and toddler system) only because it seemed to get the best reviews.

She's 5'3".  Oh and one more thing (perhaps something I should have added)....she travels a lot for pleasure.  She is out of town (cruises, long weekends, etc.) about once a month or so.

Thanks for all of the info!  You ladies are wonderful.  What an active board!

  • The UppaBaby Vista is a great stroller.  We were going to get it- but had our DD try it out, and she does not outweigh it, but was too tall for it.  She is not a tall child by the growth charts, either.  So- we decided against it.

We got the Valco Trimode with the bassinet.  Love it, love it, love it!!!  It is not as easy to switch out the bassinet to the stroller- but is not something you go back and forth between anyway.  You use the bassinet until they are too big for it, then just use the stroller part.

The other one we really liked was the Mutsy.  They have a couple differnt models- but that stroller drove like a dream, and looks really cool.  Come in fun colors, etc.

I would ask her if she wants an infant seat- some people don't wish to lug the heavy things around.  And if she is petite- it is raelly awkward to carry.  She may want a convertbile seat.

Also- consider buying her a couple months of housecleaning services or something.  That wouldn't take too much out of the stash of moeny you have available, and it would likely be appreciated by any new parent.

  • Chicco S3, but it's not out until October.

But really, with that amount of $$ I would buy a bond or something for the kid's future.

  • Don't do the bugaboo - they are great with sending new parts when they break, but my sister-in-law could build a new stroller with all of the parts that were broken.  It is breaking non-stop - and she is by no means hard on it.

My in-laws got us our dream stroller - the Macleran Techno LXR.  It is made specifically for infants (has 180 degree recline) and can be used for children that are up to 55 lbs. and is considered "luxury" because of the plush cushioning and other features that it comes with.  It is GREAT!

  • My husband and I received the Bugaboo Chameleon as a gift for DS1 nearly three years ago and I could not recommend it enough. It is the best stroller. We take it hiking, to the beach, everywhere, and we have not had a single problem. We have been extremely hard on it too. We also used the Gracco snugride with and adapter and it was so convenient. There are also a ton of accessories that you can get to go with the Bugaboo and they are actually accessories that you will use. Despite what a lot of people think, the Chameleon is extremely easy to use and it is a lot sturdier than some of the other strollers on the market. I?ve never been afraid that it will tip over. One of the best features though is the reclining feature. I can?t tell you how nice it is to be able to recline the stroller all the way so that LO can sleep undisturbed. You can also face LO out or towards you, which is a nice feature. Like I said, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
